2023 Barcelona MotoGP FP1 Result: Espargaro And Viñales Fastest As Aprilia Rule First Practice

Aleix Espargaro has ended the first session of free practice for the MotoGP class at Barcelona on top of the timesheets, in a session where Aprilias ruled the roost. Aprilia factory teammate Maverick Viñales ended the session in second, the Spaniard having swapped the lead with Espargaro throughout. Pramac Ducati's Jorge Martin jumped up to third at the end of the session, while Brad Binder took fourth on the factory KTM, a second behind Espargaro. The gaps were big, as only Espargaro and Martin used a new soft tire at the end

The final practice outing for the premier class enjoyed sunny conditions and Brad Binder relished them the most, topping the session in celebration of his fresh contract extension with KTM. The South African held onto top spot despite a late tumble on the kerbs at turn two, with Marco Bezzecchi in second place and only eight hundredths of a second slower. The Italian also took the scenic route early on, exploring the run off at turn four before getting ahead of the two Aprilias of Maverick Viñales and Aleix Espargaro.

Rain threatened to ruin the only session of timed practice for the MotoGP class, but beyond a few spots - enough to bring out the rain flags in one sector - the rain stayed away. Enough for the existing lap record of the track to be smashed, Marco Bezzecchi taking over two tenths off Enea Bastianini's record from last year.

Johann Zarco ended the first session of practice on top of the timesheets at the Red Bull Ring, the Pramac Ducati rider putting nearly four tenths of a second into second place man Fabio Quartararo on the Monster Energy Yamaha. Maverick Viñales made it three different brands in the top three on the Aprilia, the Spaniard just a fraction behind Quartararo.
