2022 Phillip Island World Supersport Superpole Result: Tyre Choice On A Drying Track

World Supersport Superpole qualifying, the last of the year, started on a damp track that promised to dry out.

Hannes Soomer opened the session with a 1'47.819, over thirteen seconds off yesterday's pace. Federico Caricasulo set a 1'47.645 followed by a 1'45.437, knocking Tom Booth-Amos and Hannes Soomer's improved times off the top.

Newly crowned champion Dominique Aegerter returned to the pits to get his front suspension fiddled with before setting his first flying lap, a 1'43.216, over two seconds quicker than everyone else. Stefano Manzi and Hannes Soomer on the Triumphs slipped up to second and third places before Aegerter set a time over four seconds quicker than them with a 1'40.484.

Jules Cluzel, in his career's last Superpole session, nipped up to second place as Aegerter set a 1'38.995, pushing every other rider apart from Cluzel out of the 105% qualifying time.

Lorenzo Baldassarri joined Jules Cluzel within 105% of Dominique Aegerter with under seven minutes left, but Aegerter set a 1'38.253 to push everyone but Cluzel out of contention.

With four minutes left, Marcel Schrotter, Can Oncu and Andy Verdoia joined Cluzel as qualifiers, joined shortly after by Federico Caricasulo and Lorenzo Baldassarri as Aegerter posted a 1'37.923, almost three seconds quicker than the closest riders. Can Oncu and Marcel Schroetter joined Aegerter in the under-1'40s club as Aegerter set a 1'37.381 followed by Can Oncu and Marcel Schroetter on slick tyres.

The slick tyres started to close on Aegerter's intermediate tyre lap time as Aegerter ran off the track and the flag came out.

After the flag, fast riders on slick tyres threatened Aegerter's time, with Federico Caricasulo and Nicolo Bulega both posting 1'37.161s ahead of Yari Montella and Raffaele De Rosa. Dominique Aegerter's time put him in fifth place.

The front row in this afternoon's race will be Federico Caricasulo in pole position, joined on the front row by Nicolo Bulega and Yari Montella. Raffaele De Rosa headed the second row alongside Dominique Aegerter and Lorenzo Baldassarri.
