2022 Motegi MotoGP FP1 Result: Miller Fastest As 19 Riders Within 1 Second

Jack Miller ended the extended FP1 session as fastest, the Ducatis taking over at the top as riders searched for a fast lap at the end of the session, after Fabio Quartararo had led for most of the afternoon. The end of FP1 turned into a mini qualifying session, with heavy rain expected on Saturday, and FP1 likely to decide passage to Q2. There were a spate of crashes at the end, as riders pushed for a hot lap.

Miller leads factory Ducati teammate Pecco Bagnaia, with Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo in third. Aleix Espargaro ended the session in fourth, putting the three main title contenders in the top four, though Enea Bastianini suffered an expensive crash at the end of the session and only qualified down in fourteenth and out of Q2. Luca Marini leads Marc Marquez, who sits ahead of his Repsol Honda teammate Pol Espargaro, while the two factory KTMs of Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira sit in eighth and ninth. Maverick Viñales rounds out the top 10.

Given the absolutely embarassing livery his brother had him in last year, it is nice to see him emerge with some credibility.

He currently sits 12th in the WC, comfortably ahead of some big names in Mir, both Marquez’s, Bezzecchi, Nakagami, Pol Espargaro etc. He’s a very solid rider in his own right. 

Thunderstorms and 100% chance rain Saturday 

Just 9% chance rain Sun and Mon, and a very slight drop in hi temp. 

This will make for another crazy Sunday opening lap, pace of some midpack bikes high. Pressure to start well. Championship points. One rider in the shop window. Predicting some fireworks, a crash, and a bit of unpleasant drama including stewards. Sorry, but my view from here...

Pretty fast crash for Bastiannini. Miller of course good in mixed conditions. Oliveira is now seen as a wet specialist, eh? Morbidelli w his switch back to the original chassis did well today, likely averting Toprak swap talk for now. Quartararo too, good pace.

Motegi is Honda's test track, right? Well...Taka w pain killers (braking hand fingers) strong, Pol good, The Marc 6th. He was as high as 2nd, happy with his chassis. 

Aleix and Maverick worked together to tow AE41. Smart. Contrast Bagnaia/ Bastiannini. Pecco still on song!

Rins fast today. With Suzuki's tail section aero, "rabbit ears" rather than dinosaur. Not super interested here, may be a passing fad. Jury out. Someone it going to get sliced by them soon, just wondering if it is the rider's bum or Taka's head.

...Simon discuss Marc vs. Fabio at Aragon in his commentary during the elongated FP1? 

He basically said it was MM's fault, that letting off the throttle where everyone is accelerating is as bad as braking too late when entering a corner on the inside of your opponent to cause a crash. Marc caused FQ to crash, and therefore, because of the first crash, MM also was responsible for Taka's crash? Anyway, that's how I heard it, and I do resect Simon's opinion. Thoughts?

It's called a brake check I guess. Not sure how it compares to the 'high sided bike flipping before your eyes check'. If a rider deliberately backed off when they should be accelerating so as to cause the rider behind trouble...they deserve a good spanking. It looked like Marc got a wobble on. He could get a good wobble on by dropping the throttle or too much throttle. Either way he has a 'get out of jail free' card. The squabble between Aleix and Enea and the need to avoid it gives him an out for backing off to in an attempt to adjust his line. The same is true for too much throttle, trying to avoid without backing off. Easy to create 'dammed if you do and dammed if you don't'. Marc has done some aggressive things in his time, he's been a bit of a danger on occasion but I really cannot see him risking that on lap 1 with most of the bikes behind him. Especially when he's just come back from the brink of retirement and some degree of permanent right arm disability.
