The first qualifying session of the weekend got underway at Le Mans and MotoE machines shone under a spotless sky, putting on a show throughout the two qualifying sessions. After a rather underwhelming performance in practice, Mattia Casadei had to find a way out of Q1 and comfortably did so to challenge for pole. Joining Q2 a little late and then some track limits infringements meant that the Italian was slow to post a time, but his first valid flying lap was quick enough to put him in provisional pole with one minute left of the session. Dominique Aegerter was the only rival able to string together three red sector times on the final lap, but the timing screens changed to orange for the last sector, which secured pole position for Casadei by a thousandth of a second.
Kevin Zannoni had made a quick start in Q2 to claim provisional pole straight away, but eventually got demoted to third, completing a front row covered by only two hundredths of a second. Jerez hero Eric Granado opens the second row of the grid from reigning champion Jodi Torres and with Q1 graduate Hikari Okubo closing the line-up. Matteo Ferrari was the last rider to post a time within half a second of pole, the Italian opening row three from compatriot Niccolo Canepa and Xavi Cardelus. Xavi Fores rounded out the top 10, with Alex Escrig and Hector Garzo joining him on fourth row, the duo failing to escape Q1. Miquel Pons was the big surprise of Q1, the Spaniard only sixth and forced to start the two races in France from the middle of row five.
