2021 Sachsenring MotoGP FP1 Result: Marquez Marks The Spot

The Sachsenring welcomed the premier class after a pandemic-induced hiatus and its monarch enjoyed the welcome more than most, Marc Marquez quickly placing his name at the top of the timesheets. The Spaniard did the most laps and demonstrated over the course of those 25 laps that he didn’t lose any of his speed or rhythm around his German-made playpen. It even looked like a Honda top 3 for a while, until Fabio Quartararo dusted himself off from an early crash at turn 12 and climbed to second on the timesheets, a tenth and a half off the leader. That dropped Takaaki Nakagami to third and the LCR man was the final rider to post a 1:21 lap time in the morning session.

Pol Espargaro started the day with a tumble of his own at turn 3 but recovered up to fourth, while Aleix Espargaro joined his brother in the top five. Jack Miller seemed to have solid pace as well, despite being only sixth on the timesheets. Alex Rins made his return to the track after the cycling mishap in Barcelona and jumped up to seventh place late in the session. Johann Zarco in eighth place was the last rider within half a second of the leader, while Joan Mir made a late climb up to ninth on fresh rubber, having spent much of the session down in 18th. Maverick Viñales rounded out the top 10 positions ahead of Pecco Bagnaia, with Miguel Oliveira the lead KTM in 12th place, six tenths off top spot.

Not quite as fast as Fp1 2019. But Marc Marquez is back where he wants to be, numero uno!

Three Hondas in the top four. Does this make it a Honda track?

So close, again, as usual these days. Eighteen within a second. All but Brad Binder within 1.07. Brad is no slouch either.
