2021 Barcelona Moto2 Qualifying Result: Friendly Fire

The Moto2 qualifying show was very much the Red Bull KTM Ajo show, unfolding in front of the grateful scattering of fans around the Barcelona circuit. Remy Gardner and teammate Raul Fernandez traded top spot for the length of Q2, until the Australian improved the lap record with the only 1:42 time of the weekend and the rookie had no reply left. Gardner will defend his lead in the championship from pole position in tomorrow's race, a tenth of a second quicker than Fernandez. Bo Bendsneyder makes a rare but very much welcome appearance on the front row, the Dutch rider third and four tenths off pole.

Augusto Fernandez continued his good run of form on home soil to claim fourth on the grid, while Fabio Di Giannantonio ended a rollercoaster of a day in fifth place. The Italian was back in action after a nasty crash at turn 4 in FP3 sent him to the doctor’s office and he navigated his way out of Q1 and all the way up to the second row of the grid. Xavi Vierge closes row two, while rookie Ai Ogura opens row three ahead of Sam Lowes, who struggled to get within seven tenths of pole and was only two hundredths of a second quicker than Q1 qualifier Somkiat Chantra.

Marco Bezzecchi had even worse of an afternoon, down in 10th and in the company of Aron Canet and Q1 leader Jorge Navarro, who also suffered a tumble early in Q2. Marcel Schrotter qualified 13th, although any result would have been a bonus after the massive save he pulled off at turn 4 early in the session. He will be joined on row 5 by rookie teammate Tony Arbolino and Lorenzo Dalla Porta, while Joe Roberts was only 17th fastest.

Weight off Remy's shoulders and now that little extra speed is easier. Congratulations!

Twenty riders within a second of Pole, close, very close!

Hang in there Cameron. You will get there.

Thanks for correcting me Ibis117

The fastest two that didn't make it out of Q1 were within a second of Remy's pole time. that is Garzo and Syahrin. The four that did go through to Q2 were fast enough (<1second down) in Q1 even if they didn't reproduce those laptimes when it mattered.

Enjoy the races Ibis117
