2021 Barcelona MotoGP FP2 Result: Zarco Demotes Morbidelli

A still overcast Barcelona circuit set the scene for the second practice session of the day but given the improved conditions and the extra handful of experience on the revised layout, FP1 times were quick to tumble. Franco Morbidelli claimed top spot early in the session and went unchallenged until the final time attack, when Johann Zarco snuck ahead by two hundredths of a second, both riders also looking strong on pace. Fabio Quartararo trailed his former teammate by a tenth and was thereabouts on rhythm, while Brad Binder in fourth place was the last rider to post a time within half a second of the leader.

Pecco Bagnaia and Maverick Viñales kept close and consistent, less than a tenth of a second ahead of Jack Miller. Enea Bastianini impressed in 8th place, the rookie only 7 tenths off top spot and ahead of the much more experienced FP1 leader, Aleix Espargaro. Pol Espargaro posted an identical time to his brother around their favourite playground and grabbed the final position in the provisional top 10.

Takaaki Nakagami missed out by half a tenth, while the top 16 positions were covered by one second. That also included the likes of Miguel Oliveira, who started the session with some dirt-tracking at turn 10 and finished it down in 14th after being the only rider to tackle the time attack on hard tyres. Marc Marquez was also alone in his decision to run a medium rear for the shootout and following Joan Mir around only helped him in finishing ahead of the reigning world champion in 15th position. Valentino Rossi ended the day 19th, over a second and a half slower than the leader and hoping for a much better Saturday.
