2021 Le Mans Moto2 Qualifying Result: A Matter Of When, Not If

After a mostly dry Q1, rain made a comeback ahead of Q2 but with conditions changing in the blink of an eye and from corner to corner, it made tyre choice a tough call and keeping within the white lines even tougher. Things stabilised for the final half of the session and the rapidly improving track allowed for fast progress to be made, riders finding about half a second at a time in the fight for pole. In the end it was a three-way battle between the Red Bull KTM Ajo duo and the Q1 leader but ultimately the stars aligned for exceptional rookie Raul Fernandez to take an inevitable maiden pole position in the intermediate class. Marco Bezzecchi made a late jump onto the front row, two tenths off pole, while Joe Roberts navigated through a dry Q1 to challenge for pole in Q2, before getting demoted to third.

Aron Canet also found some late speed to open the second row of the grid from Augusto Fernandez, who seems to be getting his season back on track. Bo Bendsneyder did a fine job to complete row two, while Remy Gardner was a challenger for pole until a mistake at Garage Vert on his final flying lap cost him and he had to settle for seventh. The Flexbox HP40 duo of Hector Garzo and Stefano Manzi will join him on the third row, while Sam Lowes rounded out the top ten. The British rider was tempted by slicks early on but it proved to be the wrong call so it took him some time to post a timed lap and he never matched the speed of the leaders. Nicolò Bulega and Xavi Vierge will accompany him on the fourth row of the grid, while most recent victor Fabio Di Giannantonio qualified 15th, only doing better than the men who crashed after just a couple of laps: Ai Ogura, Simone Corsi and Jorge Navarro.
