2021 Le Mans Moto3 FP2 Result: Rodrigo Takes Over

After the crash fest of the morning session, bright sunshine bathed Moto3 machines as they left pitlane for FP2, although clouds still surrounded the French circuit. Riders were quick to improve on the morning’s benchmark and the final 10 minutes seemed even more important than usual in securing a provisional top 14 position, given the questionable weather forecast for Saturday at Le Mans. Gabriel Rodrigo made a fast start to his weekend, taking control of the session in the final couple of minutes and although there were plenty of red sectors on the timing screens for the final flying laps, no rival could beat his time. Darryn Binder came closest, one tenth of a second behind the Argentinian rider, while Jaume Masia dropped to third after intermittently leading the session.

Niccolò Antonelli and Deniz Öncü joined the top five, closely followed by Andrea Migno, although the Italian added a third crash of the day to his achievements, this time at turn 13. Compatriot Romano Fenati and Ryusei Yamanaka were the final riders to post a time within half a second of the leader, while Stefano Nepa and Ayumu Sasaki rounded out the top 10. The remaining places in the provisional top 14 were taken by Jason Dupasquier, FP1 leader John McPhee, Riccardo Rossi and Sergio Garcia, while Carlos Tatay missed out by a tenth of a second and was eight tenths slower than the leader.

The slight surprise of FP2 was championship leader Pedro Acosta, who dropped down the timesheets in the closing stages and finished 18th fastest, but bearing in mind that this was the rookie’s first day around Le Mans.
