Day 2 in Qatar started warm and sunny but too warm and sunny to allow much progress on the combined timesheets. The lightweight class gave it a good go at challenging the top 14 hierarchy but with little success. After rookie Izan Guevara set camp at the top of the timing screens for much of the session, the final time attack saw teammate Sergio Garcia steal the spotlight to the checkered flag. Half a second slower was Andrea Migno, while Tatsuki Suzuki was the only rider to improve his time from Friday, jumping into third in the session but nowhere near the combined top 14.
Guevara settled for fourth but will join the Q1 lineup later today. No such worries for Dennis Foggia, the Italian fifth in the session and 12th overall, while Darryn Binder was sixth quickest in FP3 but it wasn’t enough for a Q2 place. Jaume Masia was followed by rookies Xavier Artigas and Pedro Acosta, while Ryusei Yamanaka rounded out the top ten. Of that group, only teammates Masia and Acosta managed to secure Q2 positions.
Over a second down on the leader of the session but also joining them straight into the second qualifying session are Niccolo Antonelli, despite a small tumble at turn 7, Carlos Tatay, John McPhee and Ayumu Sasaki. Kaito Toba remains fastest on the combined standings despite only 18th position in FP3, while Jason Dupasquier, Jeremy Alcoba, Mazimilian Kofler and Gabriel Rodrigo did not feature much in the session but comfortably made it into Q2 courtesy of their Friday evening results.
