2021 Barcelona MotoE Race Result: Fresh Faces And Mixed Fortunes

The MotoE class closed a respectable spectacle in Catalunya with a shortened 6-lap sprint, but their show started before the lights even turned on, when poleman Eric Granado hit technical problems on the grid and the race got delayed while he was sent to pitlane.

Jordi Torres was left on “pole” but he couldn’t hold onto the lead and Dominique Aegerter took over top spot into turn 1 from Torres and Alessandro Zaccone. Granado joined the race from pitlane and was six seconds behind the leader by the end of lap 1.

The turn 1 roulette was in play for MotoE as well, so Aegerter got pushed back by Zaccone at the start of lap 2 and was soon under attack from a feisty Miquel Pons. The LCR man attacked for the lead the next time they reached the main straight but Aegerter got back ahead by turn 1, in front of Torres and Zaccone.

The lead changed hands again on lap 4, when Zaccone won the turn 1 lottery, once again from Aegerter but Torres was under attack from Pons and Mattia Casadei, both riders getting ahead by the end of that lap. However, it was mixed fortunes for the duo as Pons went on to pick up the lead with 2 laps remaining, while Casadei crashed out at turn 10.

Pons held onto the lead on the final lap and his 3-tenth advantage was just enough to avoid any attacks until the finish line, securing him a maiden win in the class. Aegerter settled for second, with Torres joining them on the podium. Zaccone and Yonny Hernandez completed the top 5, while Matteo Ferrari relinquished sixth place to Fermín Aldeguer after a penalty for exceeding track limits on the final lap. Eric Granado had made some progress to join the top 10 but crashed out on the final lap.

Although Zaccone missed out on the podium by half a second, he maintains his lead in the championship by one point from Aegerter. Torres in third is 11 points down, with Pons climbing into fourth, 18 points behind the leader. After their respective crashes, Casadei and Granado drop to fifth and sixth in the standings, 21 and 26 points down.

2021 Barcelona Moto2 Race Result: When Life Gives You Oranges, Make Prosecco

Hot asphalt awaited the intermediate class ahead of their race and the bar was set pretty high after the MotoGP thriller before them. In a familiar flashback, it was the two KTM-branded machines who hogged the limelight throughout the 22-lap race and Remy Gardner was once again the victor, crossing the finish line almost two seconds ahead to secure his third victory in the class. Rookie teammate Raul Fernandez settled for the second place trophy and a third successive podium, with Xavi Vierge stepping onto the final step of the podium after a long wait.

Gardner made a quick start from pole position to lead the way from front row starters Fernandez and Bo Bendsneyder, while Vierge climbed into fourth, ahead of Augusto Fernandez. Marco Bezzecchi also made a fast start to go from 10th on the grid to 6th after a couple corners, while rival Sam Lowes went the other way, 8th on the grid to 12th early on.

While Raul Fernandez and Bendsneyder were trading places behind him, Gardner extended a half second gap at the front by lap 2. Fernandez soon claimed the right to reel in his teammate, keeping Bendsneyder at arm’s length, with Vierge, Bezzecchi, Augusto Fernandez and Aron Canet also holding onto the chasing group. Rookie Ai Ogura had dropped a second back by lap 3 and the likes of Fabio Di Giannantonio and Lowes wouldn’t have been too happy to get stuck in that group rather than the victory battle.

By lap 4, the victory already looked like a Red Bull KTM Ajo affair, as Fernandez caught up with his teammate and left the chasing group half a second back and led by Bendsneyder. The pursuers seemed to reduce in numbers over the next few laps, only Vierge and Bezzecchi keeping calm and following the Dutchman, while the exchanges between Canet and Augusto Fernandez dropped them one second back. Ai Ogura was getting ready to cause them some headaches but Canet never got to suffer that as he crashed out at turn 5 of lap 7 and left Fernandez to resist the rookie on his own. Another second back, Lowes found some rhythm and was bringing Di Giannantonio with him.

Back at the front, the KTMs were untroubled and Raul Fernandez slid past his teammate going into turn 1 to pick up the lead with 11 laps to go. Bendsneyder, Vierge and Bezzecchi were biding their time in the battle for third, one second behind the leaders and the exchanges only started with 7 laps remaining, when Vierge found turn 1 ahead of Bendsneyder. Bezzecchi followed his example one lap later and the Dutch rider dropped to 5th.

Fernandez continued to lead with outstanding consistency but got a track limits warning with 4 laps remaining and was not dropping his teammate, the gap rarely going over one tenth of a second. Gardner made a last-second decision to make his decisive move at turn 1 with 3 laps remaining and immediately opened a gap, starting the final lap over a second ahead of his rookie teammate. Fernandez had to admit defeat once more and crossed the finish line in a safe second, while Vierge secured his first podium of the season another second later. Bezzecchi missed out on the podium by three tenths of a second, while Augusto Fernandez finally finished a race and overtook Bendsneyder for a solid fifth in the closing stages. Lowes inherited seventh place after Ogura made a rookie mistake at turn 4 with 3 laps remaining, while Marcel Schrotter, Somkiat Chantra and Joe Roberts joined the top 10, helped by a late clash between Fabio Di Giannantonio and Hector Garzo.

Gardner’s win in fine style extends his lead in the championship over his teammate to 11 points, with Bezzecchi 38 points down and Lowes a pretty significant 64.

2021 Barcelona MotoGP Race Result: Numbers Don’t Lie But They Don’t Race Either *UPDATED*

The 30th anniversary of MotoGP putting on a show in Catalunya looked like a forgone conclusion from the end of FP3 but the hot and overcast Sunday afternoon in Montmeló had a few surprises in store. After poleman Fabio Quartararo presumably broke a mirror and helped a black cat walk under a ladder, Miguel Oliveira rose to the occasion and secured an impressive first victory of the season. Johann Zarco was a slow burn rocket that really fired for the final couple of laps but it was too late to be the bride and the Frenchman settled for the bridesmaid once more, scoring his fourth podium of the season. Jack Miller’s Sunday wasn’t quite as eventful as his Saturday but the Ducati man managed his tyres well and inherited the final podium position once Quartararo tipped a salt shaker over.

It was not the usual lightning start for Miller off the line and poleman Quartararo almost managed to hold him off into turn 1 but not quite. Oliveira made a fast start from the second row and was immediately on the tail of the Ducati man, demoting the poleman to third. Joan Mir made an excellent start from 10th on the grid to join the top 5 early on, ahead of Zarco, Aleix Espargaro, Maverick Viñales and Brad Binder. Marc Marquez was one of the few tempted by the sort rear tyre and it helped him join the top 10 on the first lap, ahead of Pecco Bagnaia.

Back at the front, Miller only held onto the lead until the second lap, when he went wide at turn 4 and allowed Oliveira to take top spot. Quartararo saw an opportunity but his failed attempt at an overtake on Miller cost him another position to Mir and Aleix Espargaro, leaving the Frenchman into the claws of compatriot Zarco and teammate Viñales. Only three tenths behind, Marquez led the pursuit from Binder and Bagnaia and the Honda man soon climbed into 7th as Viñales ran wide and lost a handful of tenths on his compatriot.

Oliveira pushed at the front and maintained a gap of half a second for the next couple of laps, with Miller, Aleix Espargaro and Mir behind. Three tenths back, Quartararo found himself under pressure from Marquez and the championship leader promptly responded and got ahead of Espargaro, leaving the Spaniards to battle for fifth. While Marquez was busy battling the elder Espargaro, the younger crashed out on lap 5.

Leader Oliveira continued to extend his advantage to a full second by lap 7, helped by a mistake by Miller which allowed Mir and Quartararo ahead. Behind them, Zarco, Aleix Espargaro and Marquez provided the entertainment but the shenanigans cost them one second on the leaders and the trio had Viñales, Binder and Bagnaia waiting to pounce.

Quartararo picked up the chase with 18 laps left and had little over one second to recover on Oliveira, hoping to replace him as the runaway leader. The gap dropped under one second just one lap later and the fight stabilised behind them, with Mir and Miller holding station and Zarco quickly catching up with them, unencumbered by Marquez who crashed out of the battle for sixth, after the most encouraging start of his season to date. The Honda man was the first victim of what would become a fairly popular turn 10, with Aleix Espargaro following his example soon after and leaving Viñales in charge of the chasing pack, two seconds behind the podium battle.

Once the crash replays stopped rolling, Oliveira had Quartararo only two tenths of a second behind and the Frenchman had 14 laps to make his move but only waited one, running a tighter line at turn 5 and sneaking ahead of the Portuguese rider to start the second half of the race in the lead. If Quartararo hoped to make his escape as the prophecy said, Oliveira had different plans and used the KTM’s extra speed to breeze past the Frenchman into turn 1 next time around. While Quartararo bided his time behind the KTM once more, Mir, Zarco and Miller were trying to bridge the gap to the two leaders. The Ducatis wearing hard rear tyres seemed to be getting quicker than the Suzuki on mediums and both got ahead of the world champion with 9 laps remaining. Speaking of world champions, Valentino Rossi was the next victim of infamous turn 10 as he crashed out of the top 13.

Back at the front, Oliveira started the final 7 laps with a half second advantage on Quartararo, while the battle for third dropped over a second back, where Zarco and Miller had a small advantage on Mir and Viñales, the Yamaha man showing good speed in the closing stages. Oliveira’s advantage grew to almost a second with 4 laps remaining and Quartararo looked unable to reduce that, partly because of his fading tyres and partly because of an odd struggle with the zipper on his leathers, which had come undone. To make matters worse, Zarco was right on his tail and the got ahead of his compatriot going into turn 1 with 3 laps remaining. Quartararo seemed to really struggle as he cut the track between turns 1 and 2 and was under attack from Miller, the Ducati man soon trading places with a nearly bare-chested Quartararo, who removed his chest protector.

While some people were looking through the rulebook to see if there were any safety matters to consider for the poleman, Zarco quickly closed in on the leading KTM on the final lap but could not find a way around and a flawless Oliveira took his first victory of the season. Zarco settled for a very familiar second, while Quartararo crossed the finish line third but got a 3-second penalty for taking the shortcut at turns 1-2 after Zarco’s overtake, which dropped him off the podium. Miller inherited third, with Mir fading to fifth in the closing laps but holding back Viñales. Bagnaia took seventh place, crossing the finish line ahead of Binder, with Franco Morbidelli and rookie Enea Bastianini completing the top 10. Alex Marquez did what his brother couldn’t and finished the race on the soft rear tyre, going from 20th on the grid to finish 11th, as the top Honda at the checkered flag.

UPDATE: Quartararo received a second post-race penalty for riding without his leather suit correctly fastened and without the required chest protector. The additional 3-second time penalty drops him to sixth place, promoting Mir and Viñales one position. 

Quartararo's freaky Sunday reduces his advantage in the world championship to 14 points from compatriot Zarco, with Miller climbing into third, 25 points back and 2 points ahead of teammate Bagnaia. Mir stays fifth, 37 points behind the leader.

2021 Barcelona Moto3 Race Result: A 21 Lap Mountain And It Was Quite A Climb

Grey patches of cloud gave us a little scare during morning warm-up but the skies cleared by the time the lightweight class lined up on the grid for their seventh attempt at victory in 2021. At the end of a rollercoaster 21 laps, Spain got its 250th victory in the lightweight class through Sergio Garcia. The GASGAS rider took the home win after starting 19th on the grid and quickly working his way through the pack but it was a close call as Jeremy Alcoba crossed the finish line only a hundredth of a second behind. The Gresini rider climbed onto the second step of the podium after employing a less than popular strategy on the final lap. It looked like an all Spanish podium on home soil until a post-race penalty awarded an emotional Deniz Öncü his maiden Grand Prix podium.

Poleman Gabriel Rodrigo was another of the main actors and he made a great start off the line from his front row colleagues Niccolò Antonelli and Alcoba. The rest of the top 10 on the grid was largely maintained on lap 1, other than Ricardo Rossi, who crashed out on the warm-up lap and missed the start. Lap 2 started with Izan Guevara taking his time in the limelight with a perfect slipstream into turn 1, while teammates Rodrigo and Alcoba got demoted behind Antonelli, Darryn Binder and John McPhee. Meanwhile, Garcia managed to break into the top 10, while compatriot Pedro Acosta, who started even further back in 25th, climbed up to 18th.

Binder was the winner of the slipstream roulette at the start of lap 3 and teammate McPhee picked up the lead one lap later but the duo led the way for a sizeable group. Garcia made his way into the battle for victory soon enough, joining the Petronas boys and the Gresini duo in the limelight early on. Acosta’s progress wasn’t quite as quick but the championship leader was at the back of the lead group and knocking on the doors of point scoring positions.

McPhee, Rodrigo and Binder seemed to stretch the smallest of gaps to the rest of the group on lap 6 but it didn’t last long as the pursuers picked up the pace. The poleman returned to prime position at the start of lap 7, with teammate Alcoba following his example one lap later, while a second and a smidge behind them, Acosta entered the top ten positions.

At the start of lap 9, McPhee took over the lead of a 18-man group where the main actors continued to be the Petronas, Gresini and GASGAS riders, with the Red Bull KTMs of Sasaki, Acosta and Masia waiting to pounce. However, the Scotsman’s time in the spotlight was cut sort by a high-side at turn 2 the very next lap, his runaway machine also sending Andrea Migno and Tatsuki Suzuki into the gravel trap from outside the top 10.

The incident changed the narrative at the front and Guevara was left in charge of the pack but the Spaniard soon found himself under friendly fire from compatriots Acosta and Garcia. Garcia rider led the way at the halfway stage of the race but the next few laps were quite the tango on the main straight, with the likes of Romano Fenati and Öncü taking turns at the front and Acosta and Garcia dropping to the back of the top 10 occasionally and spending the rest of the lap recovering from the turn 1 lottery.

Although Alcoba and Acosta traded top spot with 9 laps remaining, the leading group still had 15 riders in total and the lead continued to change hands several times a lap. Rodrigo crossed the line first with five laps remaining, while his two closest rivals, Garcia and Acosta, both got track limits warnings and had to be extra cautious in the closing stages. Despite challengers sniffing all around him, the poleman kept himself inside the top three for the next few laps.

Rodrigo eventually relented the lead to his teammate with 2 laps remaining and dropped all the way down to 9th as things got tight into turn 1. No one seemed to want to lead over the line for the final lap, particularly Alcoba, who slowed right down and bunched up the pack quite dangerously. Suddenly, Masia found himself in charge, having spent the entire race towards the bottom of the top 10, while teammate Acosta dropped as low as 13th on that lap.

Garcia made the decisive overtake at turn 10 while teammate Guevara crashed out right behind him and the Spaniard held onto the lead by one hundredth of a second in the drag to the line with Alcoba. Masia took the flag third but was soon demoted one position for exceeding track limits on the final lap and Öncü inherited third. Binder finished in the top 5, ahead of Rodrigo and Acosta, while Antonelli, Kaito Toba and Stefano Nepa rounded out the top 10 positions after a late crash at the back of the group took Ayumu Sasaki and the Leopard duo out of contention.

Despite missing out on the podium once more, Acosta did well to finish 7th given his disastrous qualifying but victor Garcia reduced the gap in the championship to 39 points, with Masia 38 points back.

2021 Barcelona Moto3 E-Pole Result: Back To Basics

Sunny Barcelona meant that the MotoE class reverted back to the usual qualifying format after the washout of Le Mans but it was French GP victor Eric Granado who secured pole position by seven hundredths of a second from reigning cup champion Jordi Torres. The Spaniard will start his home race from the middle of the front row and the duo will be joined by title contender Dominique Aegerter.

Miquel Pons missed out on the front row by seven thousandths of a second and will open row two from Lukas Tulovic and championship leader Alessandro Zaccone. Fermín Aldeguer was fastest in practice and still holds the quickest lap of the weekend but could not convert that speed into anything more than seventh on the grid, sharing third row with Mattia Casadei and Matteo Ferrari.
