2009 World Superbikes Kyalami FP1 Result - Fabrizio Leads, Replacements Impress

Results of the World Superbike FP1 session at Kyalami:

The session got off to a bad start, with Regis Laconi crashing on the first lap, causing the session to be red flagged. Once the session got underway again, Michel Fabrizio picked up where he left off, almost immediately taking the lead with a big gap back to the next man, team mate Noriyuki Haga. Haga chipped away at Fabrizio's lead, but the Italian stood very firmly at the top of the standings.

It was only towards the end of the session that riders started to make an impression on Fabrizio, with Carlos Checa, Johnny Rea, and Leon Haslam all getting within 1/10th of a second of the Italian. Shane Byrne finally started setting results more in keeping with his status as BSB champion, the Briton finishing 6th fastest, just 0.431 off Fabrizio. The replacement riders did pretty well too, Gregorio Lavilla taking the 8th fastest time on Brendan Roberts' Guandalini Ducati, and South African rider Sheridan Morais putting the Kawasaki of Makoto Tamada 7th fastest, both men profiting from previous experience here.

The Yamahas are some way off the pace, Ben Spies never better than 5th fastest, and finishing the session in 12th, two places behind team mate Tom Sykes. But the field is pretty close, with less than three quarters of a second between Fabrizio in 1st and Ryuichi Kiyonari in 14th.

2009 World Superbikes Monza Race 2 Result - Comfortable Victory Closes Up The Championship

World Superbikes Monza race 2 result and recap:

Ben Spies took a comfortable victory in the second World Superbike race at Monza, despite hitting birds going through the woods. The Texan went into the first corner in 2nd place, behind Noriyuki Haga, the Japanese Ducati rider hit a flock of pigeons exiting the Curva Grande, which held him up and left him finish the first lap down in 15th, only to crash out on the third lap at high speed through the Parabolica.

Spies ran away at the front from that moment on, his lead getting up to over 5 seconds at one point, before easing off to ensure he didn't run out of fuel like he did in race 1. Fabrizio spent all race trying to fend off the attentions of Ryuichi Kiyonari to take a 2nd place, the Japanese Ten Kate rider finishing in 3rd. Fellow Ten Kate rider pipped Max Biaggi to 4th on the last lap.

2009 World Superbikes Monza Race 1 Result - Bizarre Last Corner Incident Gives Unexpected Winner

Result of World Superbikes race 1 at Monza:

Michel Fabrizio took a surprising victory in the first World Superbike race at Monza, after a bizarre finish to the race. Fabrizio, Xerox Ducati team mate Noriyuki Haga and Yamaha's Ben Spies slugged it out for most of the race, but Ben Spies seemed to have it in the bag with two laps to go. Fabrizio and Haga were holding each other up vying for 2nd, and Spies entered the final Parabolica corner with a comfortable lead. But at that point, the Texan's Yamaha suddenly died on him, and Spies rolled slowly through the corner, forced to watch how 14 other riders crossed the line ahead of him.

Spies' misfortune gifted Fabrizio his first win in World Superbikes, ahead of Haga. Ryuichi Kiyonari was given third, despite Max Biaggi crossing the line in third, as Biaggi was penalized 20 seconds for cutting across the Roggia chicane early in the race.

The race started an hour late, after the first attempt to start the race ended in disaster at Monza's notorious first chicane. Max Neukirchner, Troy Corser, Brendan Roberts, Tommy Hill and Makoto Tamada all piled up, Neukirchner being badly injured, with a broken collarbone and a suspected broken femur being reported.

2009 Monza FIM Superstock 1000 Cup Race Results - Parabolica Is The Decider

Results and summary of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup race at Monza:

The opening race of the day at the World Superbike round at Monza turned out to be exemplary for how to race at the classic Italian track. After the usual chaos of the first couple of chicanes, where a mass of riders are forced to go straight on with nowhere left on the track, four riders made an early break, led by local Ducati hero Domenico Colucci, who had Suzuki's Claudio Corti, Ducati's Xavier Simeon and the Spanish Kawasaki rider Javier Fores.

Over the first 9 laps, Colucci, Corti and Simeon regularly swapped the lead, while Fores sat waiting for the inevitable mistake from the front three. But again, the close battles between the front three saw Colucci run straight on at the chicane, and on lap 10, the Italian was forced to come in for a ride through, putting him out of contention. Colucci backing off a little saw Fores lose touch with Corti and Simeon, leaving the Italian and the Belgian to dispute the win. Simeon started the lap ahead, but Corti used his Suzuki's ability to hold a tighter line to move into the lead. Simeon then used the better braking of the Ducati to get ahead going into the Ascari chicane, but through the Parabolica, Corti once again used the tighter turning of the Suzuki to his advantage, taking the lead through Monza's thrilling final turn to take victory just a 1/100ths of a second ahead of Simeon. Javier Fores' final spot on the podium was never seriously challenged from behind.

2009 World Superbike Superpole Results And Report - No Room For Doubt

Superpole results:

Superpole 1:

Max Neukirchner was fastest in Superpole 1, finishing ahead of Ben Spies and Michel Fabrizio. Leon Haslam was the surprise loser, being ruled out of Superpole early, despite having been on the podium in Assen.

Riders out: Leon Haslam, Luca Scassa, Karl Muggeridge and Jakub Smrz.

Superpole 2:

Yukio Kagayama smashed the lap record early, only for Michel Fabrizio to take it from him. Nori Haga looked like being knocked out, before putting in a blinding lap, close to the lap record to make it a Xerox Ducati one-two. Max Biaggi had a crash early on, but had already set a lap fast enough to get through. To

Riders out: Carlos Checa, Tom Sykes, Troy Corser, Regis Laconi, Broc Parkes, Ruben Xaus, Shane Byrne, Shinya Nakano.

Superpole 3:

Ben Spies took his fifth straight pole of the season at Monza during Superpole, continuing an amazing run of qualifying form from the Texan rookie. What made his performance even more impressive is that the American only needed a single qualifying tire to do so. Johnny Rea was the first rider to put in a fast lap, but his time would not stand for long. With less than half of the session gone, Ryuichi Kiyonari took provisional pole, smashing Troy Bayliss previous pole record by a quarter of a second, with a lap of 1'44.642.

Kiyo's pole record would not last long: Less than a minute later, Ben Spies streaked across the line in an astonishing time of 1'44.073, over 8/10ths quicker than Bayliss' previous record. Spies fast time upset the plans which Michel Fabrizio had for domination, the Italian crossing the line just a few seconds later with a time of 1'44.270.

Max Neukirchner takes the final place on the front row of the grid, while Noriyuki Haga could do no better than 5th fastest, putting the Japanese Ducati rider at the head of the second row. Haga starts ahead of Johnny Rea, Max Biaggi and Yukio Kagayama.

2009 World Superbikes Monza FP2 Result - Fabrizio Makes It Every Session So Far

Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio made it four sessions out of four during the second free practice session. Ben Spies stood atop the timesheets for most of the session, looking like he might finally break Fabrizio's hegemony, but the Italian put in a flying lap with just a couple of minutes to go to reaffirm his authority. Spies ended the session in 2nd spot, ahead of Ryuichi Kiyonari and Noriyuki Haga.

2009 World Supersport Monza Qualifying Result - Less Than One Tenth Separates Top Three

World Supersport Qualifying Practice results and summary:

Cal Crutchlow added a pole position to his domination of free practice in the World Supersport class at Monza on Saturday. But Crutchlow's pole didn't come as easy as his top spot in free practice, pipping Kawasaki's Joan Lascorz by just 0.033 seconds and Yamaha team mate Fabien Foret by just under a tenth.

The session was halted temporarily, after a host of riders, including Kenan Sofuoglu, Mark Aitchison, Barry Veneman and Fabrizio Lai all crashed on oil dropped by another bike. After the oil had been cleaned from the track, the session had only 20 minutes left to run, leaving the riders short of time to get a result.

That was just enough for Crutchlow to fend off Lascorz' challenge and clinch pole. Eugene Laverty improved one vital position from this morning's free practice session, just enough to get onto the front row. With the Yamahas clearly faster than the Hondas here, Laverty will have to latch onto the Yamahas right from the line if he is not to lose touch with them, and be in with a chance of a podium.

Mark Aitchison lost a couple of important places, dropping from 3rd fastest to 5th on the grid in the final minutes. Aitchison will have Ten Kate riders Kenan Sofuoglu and Andrew Pitt beside him on the grid, while Gianluca Nannelli caused a bit of a surprise by putting the Triumph onto the 2nd row of the grid. Stiggy Honda's Ant West continued to struggle here, only managing a 20th place start.
