2007 Donington FP1 Times - Day 1

The session was held in a downpour, for much of the time, but dried out towards the end. Dani Pedrosa and Ant West were fastest when it was raining hardest, with Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden quicker towards the end of the session. Several riders took an excursion into the gravel, including Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi. Pedrosa stayed upright, but Rossi fell, though he remained uninjured.

The Toseland Annoucement: Sometimes We Let Ourselves Get Carried Away

Well, the hyperactive state which the fevered speculation surrounding Anthony West had induced in the assembled motorcycle racing press and followers has claimed its first casualty. As it turns out, the announcement made by James Toseland on Thursday was a bit of a let down, an announcement about obtaining a new personal sponsor, Bennetts motorcycle insurance. Bennetts are already the title sponsor for the British Superbike series, so expanding their reach to include what is currently Britain's biggest name in motorcycling is a very sensible move.

But it was not the announcement we were all waiting for. Toseland is a hot favorite to make the switch to MotoGP next year, but is waiting for the right pacakge. Talks with Gresini have yet to yield a result, and Toseland has also been linked with Ducati, as well as the rumored Ten Kate MotoGP team, news of which has been conspicuously absent of late. We shall have to wait just a little bit longer for this particular piece of the puzzle to fall into place.

That Bennetts press release in full.

Bennetts Goes Global

In addition to its successful title sponsorship campaign with the British Superbike Championship, Bennetts, the UK’s number one for bike insurance* is going global with an exciting Superbike World Championship programme.

The Peterborough-based motorcycle insurance provider will launch its new partnership with series organisers FG Sport at the forthcoming British round of the series at Brands Hatch. It will take the title of official series sponsor for the remainder of this year’s championship and the whole of the 2008 championship.

Bennetts, the UK’s number one for bike insurance* has also announced personal sponsorship of British rider and championship leader James Toseland. The Isle of Man resident will be supported by Bennetts for the remainder of 2007 – a further demonstration of the company’s passion for motorcycle racing and the industry as a whole.

“We are proud to be strengthening our sponsorship programme in this way,†says Mark Fells, Marketing Director, Bennetts. “We’re really excited to be involved with the Championship. We already have a relationship with James and with him enjoying such huge success in this year’s series, it seems the perfect time for us to offer our support to him as he looks set to become World Superbike Champion for the second time. This complements our current sponsorship of the domestic championship perfectly.â€

“It’s great news to hear that the series is attracting further support from a leading UK brand,†says Superbike World Championship contender James Toseland. “I’m proud to be associated with Bennetts, the UK’s number one for bike insurance* and I believe that their sponsorship can have nothing but a positive effect on the championship.â€

2007 Mugello FP3 Times - Day 2

Though the session started under overcast skies once again, the weather gods held fire over Mugello this morning, allowing the third free practice to take place in dry, if not exactly glorious conditions. And as on Friday morning, it was once again Dani Pedrosa who dominated the morning's session. Pedrosa, who is using an updated chassis here, was consistently faster than the rest of the pack, running 1'50s for most of the session.

Valentino Rossi set the second fastest time, finding decent pace on his last run of the session, the only other man to consistently get into the 1'50 bracket. Rossi edged out Casey Stoner, the Ducati man setting consistent low 1'51s throughout the session. Stoner's Ducati team mate Loris Capirossi set the 4th fastest time, after running mid-pack until the end, while Marco Melandri looked competitive at his home Grand Prix, setting the 5th fastest time on his Gresini Honda.

Alex Barros was 6th with one fast lap early in the session, the first of the Pramac Ducatis, ahead of John Hopkins, who also ran consistently low 1'51 times, and looks to have decent race pace. Tech 3 Yamaha's Makoto Tamada surprised a few people with his 8th fastest time, though his fastest time was set on a single lap at the end of the session, raising the suspicion that he used a Dunlop qualifier for his time. Alex Hofmann was 9th fastest on the other Pramac Ducati, but also set an impressively consistent set of low 1'51s in his last run, while Hopkins' Suzuki team mate Chris Vermeulen was 10th fastest in the dry, after being so impressive in the wet yesterday. Vermeulen was another rider to set a string of low 1'51s during his final run.

Though there looks like being a very close fight for 3rd or 4th, with a group of 5 or 6 capable of running in the low 1'51s, only Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi were capable of running what looks like being the winning race pace, which will be mid 1'50s. Pedrosa in particular was very, very strong, and Rossi will have to pull out all the stops to keep the Spanish challenger in check.

Of course, there's still the weather. The weather looks like it could go either way on Sunday, giving us either a wet race, a dry race, or a bit of both. Either way, it should be interesting.
