Qatar 1 MotoGP Test Sunday 5pm Times: Bradl Leads The Yamahas

After the usual slow start to the test day at Qatar, where only test riders were out on track, the Losail International Circuit got busy about 90 minutes into the day. By the third hour, almost everyone was out and testing.

At 5pm local time, it was Stefan Bradl topping the timesheets, the Honda test rider once again showing his speed. Bradl snuck ahead of a brace of Yamahas which had been leading the test, Maverick Viñales leading Franco Morbidelli, while KTM's Miguel Oliveira is up to fourth. Fabio Quartararo is fifth, the factory Yamaha rider a couple of tenths ahead of Aleix Espargaro on the Aprilia.

Qatar 1 MotoGP Test Saturday Final Times: Espargaro Tops First Day Of MotoGP Testing

Aleix Espargaro has ended the first day of testing for the MotoGP class at Qatar on top of the timesheets. The 2021 Aprilia RS-GP is capable of posting a fast lap, as Espargaro lapped under the race lap record.

Stefan Bradl ended the day as second, the Repsol Honda rider just a quarter of a second slower than the Aprilia. Reigning world champion Joan Mir finished in third, just a few hundredths behind Bradl, and just ahead of factory Ducati rider Jack Miller. Miguel Oliviera was fastest KTM rider in fifth, ahead of Johann Zarco on the Pramac Ducati, while Franco Morbidelli was the fastest Yamaha in seventh.

Alex Rins set the eight fastest time on the second Suzuki, half a second behind Aleix Espargaro, and just a bit ahead of Maverick Viñales. Alex Marquez was the fastest official Honda rider, the LCR rider ending the day in tenth.

Qatar 1 MotoGP Test Saturday 8pm Times: Aleix Espargaro Under Race Lap Record

In the hour reserved for the MotoGP race on the 28th of this month, the riders stepped up their speeds on the first day of the MotoGP test at Qatar. Aleix Espargaro is now under the race lap record, the 2021 Aprilia RS-GP showing an excellent turn of speed. Honda test rider Stefan Bradl is second, while Joan Mir has shown the Suzuki has some one-lap pace as well, setting the third fastest time just a fraction behind Bradl.

Jack Miller is the fastest Ducati, making it four different manufacturers in the first four places, while Johann Zarco is fifth quicest on the Pramac Ducati, just ahead of Franco Morbidelli on the 2019 Yamaha M1.

Testing is due to end at 9pm, and will be followed by start practice.

Qatar 1 MotoGP Test Saturday 7pm Times: Johann Zarco Takes Over At The Top

Pramac Ducati rider Johann Zarco has taken over the top of the timesheets with two hours to go on the first day of the MotoGP test at Qatar. The Frenchman bumped Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaro down into second, while luxury Honda test Stefan Bradl is in third. Factory Ducati rider Jack Miller is in fourth, ahead of a Yamaha armada led by Maverick Viñales, and followed by Franco Morbidelli, Fabio Quartararo, and Yamaha's new test rider Cal Crutchlow.

Qatar 1 MotoGP Test Saturday 6pm Times: Aleix Espargaro Leads On New Aprilia RS-GP

The track has been busy on the first day of testing for MotoGP. At 6pm, around the time the sun goes down, it was Aleix Espargaro fastest, three tenths off the race lap record, but 1.7 seconds slower than the outright lap record. Honda test rider Stefan Bradl was second quickest, ahead of Fabio Quartararo on the Yamaha. Miguel Oliveira was first KTM in fourth, ahead of Valentino Rossi in fifth.

Qatar 1 MotoGP Shakedown Test 6pm Times: Riders Struggle In Windy And Dusty Conditions

Testing is underway in Qatar, and the conditions are against the riders. Strong winds are blowing dust across the track, making riding very difficult indeed. That is reflected in the times: Stefan Bradl is fastest at 6pm local time, but his best lap of 1'58.427 is 3.5 seconds slower than Jorge Lorenzo's race lap record of 1'54.927 from 2016, and over 5 seconds slower than Marc Marquez' outright lap record of 1'53.380 from 2019.

The test riders currently lead the way, as the MotoGP rookies get their first taste of their bikes. Enea Bastianini was a late arrival to the track, the Italian having returned a false positive Covid-19 test, before a second test cleared him to participate.

Although there is a great deal of interest in how Cal Crutchlow might fare on his first outing as a Yamaha test rider, he is sharing testing duties with Kohta Nozane and Katsuyuki Nakasuga, and the three test bikes all have controls set up the same to allow them to hop between bikes, making it hard to tell who has set what time.

Testing continues until 9pm this evening.

Portimão Moto2 & Moto3 Test: Gardner Dominates Moto2, Acosta Leads McPhee In Moto3

While the MotoGP teams are already in Qatar ahead of the first test of the 2021 season, the Moto2 and Moto3 teams are spread across circuits in Europe to prepare for the new season at private tests. A large part of the grid in the junior classes has been at Portimão for the past two days, getting ready for Qatar.

In the Moto2 class, it was Remy Gardner who was quickest, the Australian continuing his dominance at the Portuguese circuit. Gardner was the only rider under the 1'43 bracket, adding the fastest time of the test to his race win, pole record, and race lap record at the track.

Marco Bezzecchi ended the day second, over a third of a second behind Gardner, while Joe Roberts ended as third fastest, the American rider making a solid transition to the Italtrans team. The Moto2 rookies impressed, Tony Arbolino under a second off the time of Gardner, and just ahead of American Superbike champion Cameron Beaubier, who takes Joe Roberts' place in the American Racing team.

In the Moto3 class, Pedro Acosta just inched ahead of John McPhee, the Red Bull Ajo rookie beating the veteran Petronas rider by five hundredths of a second. Andrea Migno set the third quickest time, ahead of a close gaggle of riders composed of Migno, Darryn Binder, Jeremy Alcoba, Jaume Masia, and Gabriel Rodrigo.

The riders pack up now before heading to Jerez for another mass test next week.

Jerez MotoGP Private Test: Aleix Espargaro Fastest As Test Riders Prepare For Qatar

While most of MotoGP is still in launch mode, the test riders and concession teams have been busy preparing for the 2021 MotoGP season at Jerez. Honda, KTM, and Aprilia have been taking advantage of the warm spring temperatures at the Circuito de Jerez to test their bikes ahead of the first official test of the season at Qatar.

On track are Honda's test rider - and provisional replacement for Marc Marquez, should he not be fit at the start of the season - Stefan Bradl, KTM test rider Dani Pedrosa, and Aprilia's test rider/candidate for a full-time ride, Lorenzo Savadori. As Aprilia are the only factory still with concessions, not yet having scored sufficient podiums to lose their extra testing and development privileges, Aprilia's number one rider Aleix Espargaro is also there, testing the 2021 spec of the Aprilia RS-GP, which includes a new aero package according to the well-informed Italian website GPOne.com.

While Stefan Bradl had been quickest on the first day, it was Espargaro who was fastest on day two, the Aprilia rider posting a 1'37.747, according to the Jerez Circuit live timing website. To put that into perspective: in July last year, at the Andalusian Grand Prix (aka Jerez 2), Espargaro posted a time of 1'37.070 in FP3, a time which he would not match during qualifying. This early in the season, that is a promising time.

Stefan Bradl was second fastest on the Honda RC213V, which is said to have a heavily revised chassis for 2021. Dani Pedrosa continued his refinement work for KTM, posting the third fastest time, while Lorenzo Savadori, who has to see off Bradley Smith in the chase for the second Aprilia seat, was fourth fastest. Savadori is still struggling with a shoulder injury, so it should come as no surprise that his best time is over 2 seconds slower than his stablemate Espargaro.

Absent from the test are Ducati, Suzuki, and Yamaha. Michele Pirro has already tested at Jerez for Ducati back in January. Yamaha, meanwhile, won't start testing their new version of the Yamaha M1 until the Qatar test, scheduled to start on March 5th, where Cal Crutchlow will get his first taste of the Yamaha.

The reason for the delay, team manager Maio Meregalli explained during the launch, was the sheer quantity of new parts Yamaha had to test. "We are going to bring a lot of material, and as far as I have been told they don't remember in Japan the last time they have been able to prepare so many parts." Preparing, catalogging, packing, and shipping those parts to Qatar in time for the test was time consuming, leaving no room in the schedule to test earlier.
