2020 Aragon Moto2 FP2 Result: Di Giannantonio Edges Ahead

A much sunnier Aragon awaited the intermediate class for their second practice session and it greatly helped their pursuit of provisional top 14 positions. The final time attack still saw a handful of crashes but there were no such worries for the fastest man of the day, Fabio Di Giannantonio grabbing the lead in the closing stages by half a tenth from Marco Bezzecchi. Sam Lowes held top spot for much of the proceedings but a late crash at turn seven dropped him to third on the timesheets.

Edgar Pons sparked a surprise as he climbed into fourth ahead of Luca Marini, the championship leader proving to be back in form after an eventful outing in France. Enea Bastianini spent the first half of the session finding his feet outside of the top ten but the Italian steadily improved to finish the day sixth, four tenths off top spot and with a sensational save on his elbow at turn 2. Marcos Ramirez and Remy Gardner were split by only one thousandth of a second for seventh and eighth position, while Jorge Martin and Joe Roberts rounded out the top ten.

Jorge Navarro missed out on top position despite being only six tenths off the lead, while Marcel Scrotter was the only rider not to improve his time from FP1. Regardless, the German secured a provisional top 14 position together with Hector Garzo and Jake Dixon. The likes of Tetsuta Nagashima and Tom Luthi ended the day one second slower than Di Giannantonio and will hope for a much warmer Saturday morning in Aragon.

2020 Estoril World Superbike FP1 Result: Redding Leads Gerloff

Scott Redding, with a purely mathematical chance of taking the title from Jonathan Rea, opened up the weekend at Estoril with the quickest time in the morning's session at a track hardly any of the riders have raced at. Behind Redding, there were four Yamahas, headed by Garrett Gerloff and Loris Baz, between him and Jonathan Rea who needs only one point this weekend to take his sixth title.

2020 Aragon MotoGP FP2 Result: Vinales On A Mission

A bit of sunshine over Motorland Aragon managed to heat up the surface to a generous (by comparison to FP1) 20 degrees of temperature and this came with inevitably quick improvements over this morning’s benchmark. Yamaha were quick to reclaim the top positions on the timing screens, with Maverick Vinales once again the quickest of the lot and the only rider in the 1:47s. Fabio Quartararo followed, two tenths behind, with teammate Franco Morbidelli as the final rider within half a second of the leader.

Joan Mir briefly dethroned the Yamahas but had to make do with fourth in the end, ahead of the Honda of Cal Crutchlow. Aleix Espargaro impressed in sixth, finishing ahead of brother Pol Espargaro, the two only separated by seven hundredths of a second. Alex Marquez looked pretty handy around the home track too and climbed into eighth on his final flying lap – one second down on Vinales’ time, while one thousandth of a second faster than Takaaki Nakagami.

Alex Rins secured a crucial final top ten position to the detriment of the entire Ducati contingent, who struggled to secure Q2 spots despite the improved conditions. Johann Zarco looked like he had the best chance but a late crash at turn 2 proved costly and pushed him out of the top ten in the closing stages of FP2. He was very closely followed on the timesheets by Tito Rabat, Andrea Dovizioso, Jack Miller and Danilo Petrucci, while Pecco Bagnaia seemed to struggle most, down in 19th.

2020 Aragon Moto3 FP2 Result: Fernandez Obliterates The Field

Raul Fernandez has dominated the second session of free practice for the Moto3 class at Aragon, leading the session almost from start to finish. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider was eight tenths or more faster than the rest of the grid for most of the session, the others only catching up at the end.

Romano Fenati ended the session in second place, four tenths slower than Fernandez, and just ahead of the championship leader Albert Arenas. The Aspar rider was just over a hundredth of a second faster than this morning's fastest rider, Darryn Binder, while Tatsuki Suzuki ended the session, and the day, as fifth fastest.

Most of the title favorites went straight through to Q2, with the exception of John McPhee. The Petronas Sprinta rider, currently fifth in the championship, ended the session in fifteenth, just missing out on Q2, and will have one more chance on Saturday morning.

2020 Aragon Moto2 FP1 Result: Lowes Tops Cold Session As Rest Of Field Catches Up Late

Sam Lowes got off to a strong start in the first session of practice for the Moto2 class, the Marc VDS rider setting a fast lap early on and holding on until the end. It was only until the latter stages of the session that the other riders started to close the gap, Lowes' advantage standing at nearly a second for most of FP2.

In the last few minutes, Marcel Schrotter closed the gap, slashing Lowes' advantage down to five hundredths of a second, the German finding a new lease of life after the announcement that he will be back with the IntactGP team for 2021 as well. Fabio Di Giannantonio ended the session as third fastest, just six thousandths of a second slower than Schrotter's best time, while championship leader Luca Marini took fourth spot with a quick lap at the very end.

The Moto2 session was delayed as a result of the late start for MotoGP, which had been delayed due to the very cold track temperatures and the cold wind. With a bit more temperature in the tires, there were fewer crashes for the Moto2 riders, Lorenzo Dalla Porta the only rider to go down in the session.

2020 Aragon MotoGP FP1 Result: Vinales Tops Delayed Session

The premier class had to wait to explore Aragon due to track temperatures being under 10 degrees but during the half hour delay, sun warmed the surface sufficiently - just about - for Michelin to be happy to unleash the beasts. The happiest of said beasts seemed to be the Yamahas, with Maverick Vinales, Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo in charge of the timesheets as the pace was hotting up in the closing stages of FP1. Home favourite Vinales remained the fastest man of the morning as the checkered flag got waved but he wasn’t spared of the curse of turn 14. Vinales got away with a hairy moment but Morbidelli wasn’t that lucky and crashed out on his final run. Quartararo also suffered a pretty painful looking crash on his final flying lap, although his was at turn 8. Regardless, the Petronas teammates kept their top three positions on the timesheets.

Another man who visited the gravel trap, in his case at turn 2, was Le Mans podium man Alex Marquez, who then rejoined to climb into fourth, ahead of Honda colleague Takaaki Nakagami. Joan Mir in sixth place was half a second off top spot and narrowly ahead of early session leader Pol Espargaro. Cal Crutchlow, Alex Rins and Aleix Espargaro completed the top ten as the final riders to post a time within a second of Vinales.

The unhappiest with the cold windy conditions seemed to be Ducati, the factory bikes spending most of the session outside of the top 15. Jack Miller eventually made the jump to 12th, with Danilo Petrucci 15th, Andrea Dovizioso 17th and Pecco Bagnaia last, behind Johann Zarco, who had crashed early on at busy turn 14.

2020 Aragon Moto3 FP1 Result: Binder Breezes Past

The lightweight class received no warm welcome from Aragon on their return to action and riders took to the track on a cold surface while teams wrapped up warm in the pits. However, gravel traps did not get too see much activity and times got significantly quicker by the end of the 40 minutes. Darryn Binder made the best use of his final flying lap to post the only 1:59 time of the morning, the South African over three tenths of a second quicker than Celestino Vietti. The Italian was the only rider to post a time within half a second of the leader, with John McPhee third, little over the half second mark.

The gaps behind the Petronas rider were significantly smaller, Raul Fernandez in fourth only half a tenth slower than McPhee and with Niccolo Antonelli and Alonso Lopez another tenth or so back. Ai Ogura had a better start to his weekend this time around, seventh and seven tenths down on Binder, while seven hundredths faster than compatriot Tatsuki Suzuki. Romano Fenati and Yuki Kunii rounded out the top ten, while Barry Baltus and Deniz Oncu were the final riders within a second of top spot.

Championship leader Albert Arenas chose to take little risk in the cool morning conditions and finished down in 13th position, a second slower than the leader and ahead of Andrea Migno and Ayumu Sasaki. Gabriel Rodrigo was in a similar position, dropping to 19th on the timesheets, while early session leader Jaume Masia ended up 20th.

Meanwhile, Tony Arbolino sat out the first practice session awaiting the results of a Covid-19 test.

2020 Le Mans MotoE Race 2 Result: A Champion Crowned

After rain caused trouble all day, MotoE got a dry track for their title decider and the seven laps were not short of adrenaline. Jordi Torres entered the race with a solid advantage in the world standings and starting from pole position, but it was Niki Tuuli who got the holeshot from fellow front row starter Mike Di Meglio. Torres made a cautious start and got tagged at turn three, the Spaniard lucky not to get caught up in the crashes around him. Those lap one shenanigans allowed Tuuli, Di Meglio and Josh Hook to escape at the front, while Dominique Aegerter, having started 14th, was leading the pursuit. Defending champion Matteo Ferrari also made a good start from 15th on the grid, quickly joining the top ten, while also dealing with an early track limits warning.

Di Meglio found a way past Tuuli on lap two and kept him and Hook at bay for the next few laps, but Tuuli made his move into turn 1 with two laps remaining to resume the lead. Di Meglio was determined to get a home win but Tuuli defended superbly until the checkered flag, the Finish rider crossing the line one tenth ahead of the Frenchman. Hook did not get a say in the victory battle but settled for a first podium in MotoE in third, while Aegerter pushed hard but could not join the podium battle and finished fourth. Torres got attacked by Ferrari as the race entered its final lap and the Spaniard calmly conceded fifth place but crossed the finish line as a rookie world cup winner.

With Torres taking the crown, Ferrari leaves the MotoE paddock as runner-up, although equal on points with class rookie Aegerter.

2020 Le Mans Moto2 Race Result: A Bittersweet Battle

If the rain didn’t cause enough headaches for their premier class colleagues, the intermediate class had a nightmare decision to make, the race being declared wet, with dark clouds gathering above, but with a drying line persuading riders to swap to slicks. As if that drama wasn’t enough, poleman Joe Roberts got into trouble swapping tyres on the grid and was forced to start from the back of the grid – or would have started there, had the lights not gone off before the American made it into position. With one favourite out of contention before the race even started, it was a bittersweet race for Britain, Sam Lowes taking a long awaited victory after a heartbroken Jake Dixon abandoned the fight from the lead. Remy Gardner snatched second at the last possible moment from Marco Bezzecchi, after the Italian kept ahead for most of proceedings.

After Roberts’ mishap, Lowes was de facto pole but the Marc VDS rider could not take advantage off the line and Gardner made it to turn 1 first, ahead of Xavi Vierge, Jorge Martin and Lowes. Luca Marini made a steady start from the second row to only lose one position, while rival Enea Bastianini lost some more ground at the start, dropping down to 14th.

Gardner did not get much of a breather at the front, with attacks coming from Vierge and Lowes early on, the British rider starting the third lap in the lead. However, the lead group seemed to have already reduced to five names, Gardner, Dixon and Bezzecchi also in the mix, while Martin missed the boat by going wide, dropping over a second back and crashing out at turn 10 as he was pushing to catch up. That left Augusto Fernandez as the main pursuer, but over three seconds down and the same gap keeping him ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio. Quite a distance down the road, Marini and Bastianini were engaged in direct battle by lap five, the Italtrans rider progressing while the championship leader was going backwards.

Lowes did not have an easy time in the lead, getting Petronas branded headaches from Dixon and Vierge, but the latter simplified things as he highsided on the exit of turn 10. With Vierge out of contention, Lowes and Dixon were running away at the front, while Bezzecchi and Gardner struggled to keep up and dropped over three seconds back by lap seven. Things then got a bit hairy at the front for Lowes, his front locking going into turn 8 and allowing Dixon to grab the lead on lap seven, also handing him a three seconds advantage. With the battle for third comfortably behind him, Lowes pushed to reduce the gap to the leader but it looked like a tough ask. Meanwhile, Bezzecchi was fending off Gardner and Fernandez for the final podium spot, with Tom Luthi over 13 seconds back. Despite the confusing situation at the start, Roberts was knocking on the doors of the top ten for the final half of the race.

Lowes finally broke the one second barrier to Dixon with 13 long laps remaining, but Dixon responded beautifully with red hot laps that kept Lowes one second away until the closing stages. With Bezzecchi still holding off Gardner and Fernandez in the battle for third, the main action was coming from Roberts, who was sailing through the pack and climbed as high as seventh with five laps remaining.

Dixon looked in control for so long but disaster struck with four laps remaining, the Petronas rider sliding out at turn 14, handing compatriot Lowes the lead. Lowes brought it home safely to secure a long awaited victory, while Gardner sniffed around Bezzecchi on the final lap and it paid off at turn 13, the Australian taking second place away from the Italian. Fernandez and Luthi completed the top five, with Roberts a brilliant sixth given the circumstances, ahead of the Italian duo of Di Giannantonio and Lorenzo Baldassarri. Bastianini crossed the line ninth but got a three seconds penalty for taking the shortcut at turn 3, which dropped him to 11th, behind Somkiat Chantra and Marcel Schrotter.

Marini was out of point scoring positions by halfway stage and had a lonely ride to 17th place, but the Italian keeps the championship lead by 15 points from Bastianini, with teammate Bezzecchi 20 points behind. Lowes’s victory reduces his deficit significantly, 22 points down on Marini.
