A cool rainy Le Mans made for a gloomy welcome to France for the lightweight class and the result was a handful of early crashes, with turn 3 getting most of the action. As rain paused and riders settled with the conditions halfway through proceedings, the action moved from the gravel trap to the timing screens, although the final few minutes brought back the rain and inevitably the tumbles. Throughout all those shenanigans, there was one man constantly in control of the timesheets, Andrea Migno posting the only 1:54 time of the morning after leading FP1 intermittently. However, his top time got cancelled after the checkered flag, demoting him to second and promoting John McPhee to top spot, with title rival Albert Arenas keeping close in third.
Filip Salac in fourth was six tenths slower than the leader, while Raul Fernandez failed to improve on fifth after a late crash at turn 11. Compatriots Jaume Masia and Sergio Garcia came next, with the Estrella Galicia rider another of the late crashers, as was Stefano Nepa in eighth position. Yuki Kunii and Kaito Toba completed the top ten, one and a half seconds slower than the leader.
Similarly to the likes of Celestino Vietti and Gabriel Rodrigo, championship leader Ai Ogura suffered a late tumble of his own, which dropped him to 15th on the timesheets. Compatriot Tatsuki Suzuki was back in action following injury but opted not to join the proceedings in the tricky conditions.
