The drizzle had stopped by the time the intermediate class took centre stage but the wet surface still gave us quite a few adventures in the gravel trap and a handful of noteworthy saves. One man who seemed to thrive in the conditions was Kasma Daniel, who put his name at the top of the timesheets on his final flying lap. The Malaysian rider demoted Hector Garzo to second position, a quarter of a second behind the leader but only three thousandths of a second ahead of Lorenzo Baldassarri.
Despite a late tumble at turn 4, Joe Roberts kept fourth place, with Jake Dixon joining the top five. Jorge Martin in sixth was six tenths slower than Daniel, while Marco Bezzecchi, Tom Luthi and early leader Nicolo Bulega were the last men to post a time within a second of the leader. Hafizh Syahrin was another of the men to briefly put their name at the top of the timing screens and despite an early crash at turn 3, the Aspar rider rounded out the top ten, with Enea Bastianini missing out by two tenths of a second.
Amongst the other notable additions to the crash list was championship leader Luca Marini, who slid out at turn four just as he left pitlane at the start of the session. His first attempt to rejoin was halted by a bike issue in pitlane and when he eventually made it out, it was for 24th position, over three seconds down on the leader. Marcel Schrotter had an early highside at turn 14, dropping him to 17th on the timesheets, while Fabio Di Giannantonio made a visit to the medical centre after a painful looking highside at the same final turn in the closing stages of FP1. The likes of Jorge Navarro, Sam Lowes or Augusto Fernandez kept a low profile outside of the top 15, while noteworthy saves for Marcos Ramirez and Aron Canet left them outside the top 20.
