Rain was falling as the riders lined up on the grid for the Superpole race. Ten wet laps around Magny-Cours Cours at 11ºC provides challenging conditions on wet tyres.
Eugene Laverty led from pole position into turn one, but Jonathan Rea took the lead on the exit and was followed by his teammate Alex Lowes. Tom Sykes was in fourth place until turn five when Michael van der Mark red round the outside to take fourth place. Van der Mark passed Laverty for third place shortly after. Garrett Gerloff, the architect of BMW's results in the first race, tried to gain places only to meet an unrelenting Loris Baz, forcing Gerloff to run on into the chicane, dropping back to ninth place.
Jonathan Rea pulled out a slight gap from Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark as the leading trio pulled over a second away from Scott Redding, Chaz Davies and Tom Sykes. Garrett Gerloff over shot the chicane another lap, earning himself a wave from Michael Ruben Rinaldi as he returned to the track. Alex Lowes set the fastest lap, closing the gap to Rea, but Rea was quicker on lap three.
Scott Redding, over a second behind third-placed Michael van der Mark, kept the pace with the leaders while those behind him slipped back a little, Loris Baz and Chaz Davies giving him room to escape as they fought.
Jonathan Rea set the fastest lap again on laps six, seven and eight as he sneaked away from Alex Lowes. Scott Redding, however, closed in on Michael van der Mark and started hassling him over third place.
On the last lap, with the top two places locked down, the fight for third heated up, with Scott Redding cutting under Michael van der Mark into the favourite passing place of turn five, only to realise very early on that he was going in too hot, and he checked over his shoulder to make sure he would not be hit by van der Mark before conceding the place and returning to the racing line on the Yamaha's tail. Redding recovered the time lost from his mistake and once again challenged for the podium into the chicane at turns eleven and twelve, the pair swapping places and exiting side by side. Van der Mark held the inside line and fought off Redding's challenge as the pair crossed the line within fifteen hundredths of a second, Michael van der Mark only just beating Scott Redding for the last podium place.
Jonathan Rea took his three hundredth career race ahead of his team mate Alex Lowes and extended his lead to seventy one points over Scott Redding. Chaz Davies, finishing in fifth place, dropped a few points from Redding and is now fifty points behind his teammate. Michael van der Mark is only fourteen points behind Chaz Davies. Alex Lowes took fifth place off Toprak Razgatlioglu with his nine points for second place.
Eugene Laverty finished in fifteenth place from pole position while Tom Sykes pitted in. After their best qualifying of the year, the team has yet to score a point this weekend.
