2020 Magny-Cours World Supersport Race One Result: Bring A Bucket And A Mop

The rain relented a little before the start of the World Supersport race, but it hadn't stopped.

Kyle Smith led into the first turn but was swallowed up by Lucas Mahias and Andrea Locatelli. Smith recovered third place after a scrap into turn five, but the leading pair had a decent gap. Locatelli took the lead into the chicane and led Mahias over the line for the start of lap two. Mahias tried to recover the lead, but Locatelli covered the line in to turn five. Kyle Smith helps third place and made a gam from fourth-placed Manuel Gonzales.

Fifth placed Raffaele De Rosa held off Corentin Perolari and Kevin Manfredi. But over the next few laps, Hannes Soomer climbed through the pack, setting a 1'55.792 as he clawed his way to third place behind Andrea Locatelli and Lucas Mahias.

On lap ten, Locatelli briefly held the fastest lap until Hannes Soomer held it long enough for eighth-placed Kyle Smith to set a 1'54.912, three and a half seconds quicker than the riders ahead of him.

Locatelli held a one second lead over Lucas Mahias and the leading pair were fourteen seconds clear of third placed Hannes Soomer. Seven seconds behind the podium places, Can Oncu battled with Kevin Manfredi, Manuel Gonzales and Raffaele De Rosa who were being caught lap by lap by Kyle Smith. Soomer in his lonely third place set the fastest lap again.

The rain stopped.

Kyle Smith crashed out trying to catch the pack, just as he closed in on Gonzales. Four laps left, and Andrea Locatelli held the lead by six tenths of a second as Lucas Mahias closed the gap to the lead, but Locatelli didn't look troubled, and he ended the lap with almost a one second lead. Twelve seconds behind Hannes Soomer, Raffaele De Rosa and Kevin Manfredi broke free of Can Oncu and Manuel Gonzales.

With two laps remaining, Lucas Mahias had closed up onto the rear of Andrea Locatelli, but Andrea Locatelli slapped down a 1'53.962 as they started the last lap, Mahias over a second behind him. On the last lap, Glenn van Straalen crashed, rider and bike ending up on the racing line as van Straalen was a little winded, bringing out the red flag and curtailing the fourth-placed action.

Andrea Locatelli won, setting the fastest lap, ahead of Lucas Mahias and a lonely Hannes Soomer who claimed his first podium in his forty-eight race career and the first Estonian podium in World Supersport history.

Locatelli set a new record of the most points in a season, taking the record from Kenan Sofuoglu with his 288 points and three races remaining.

I almost feel like this was Locatelli's most important win thus far this season.  Sure, he's already wrapped up the championship with impressive rides and some incredible victory margins.  But this one was a victory in the muck. In conditions that so regularly display chinks in a rider's otherwise pristine armor.  And he came out on top, comfortably, in his rookie season in SSP.  That had to perhaps be even more demoralizing to Mahias than any other 2nd place he's had all year.

And he once again set the fastest lap in the process.
