2020 Magny-Cours World Superbike Superpole Result: Wet Tyres On A Damp Track

World Superbike Superpole Qualifying was twenty five minutes around a damp track on wet tyres.

Loris Baz opened qualifying with a 1'52.230 but shortly after, Alex Lowes replied with a 1'51.274 with Jonathan Rea not far behind. A few laps in, with riders gaining more confidence in the conditions, Rea moved the pace to 1'49.392, four tenths quicker than his teammate and over a second quicker than everyone else with fifteen minutes left.

At the halfway mark, Rea and Lowes pitted in, followed by Baz a minute later. Tati Mercado, fourth quickest, joined them as Garrett Gerloff knocked him and Baz down a spot as he provisionally took third place. Mercado and Michael Ruben Rinaldi were the two fastest Ducatis.

Garrett Gerloff briefly held provisional pole position with a 1'49.357 only to have Tom Sykes steal it from him with a 1'49.298, followed by Eugene Laverty posting a 1'49.122 and Alex Lowes a 1'49.060.

With a minute left, Jonathan Rea and Michael van der Mark were on quick laps, but as their laps went off the boil, Lowes. Laverty, Sykes and Gerloff were on pole-pace laps as they charged at the flag.

Garrett Gerloff set a 1'49.019 only to have Eugene Laverty nick his pole with a 1'48.644 as the flag came out. Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea snuck onto the front row behind Laverty and Alex Lowes squeezed Gerloff out of fourth place.

Eugene Laverty and Tom Sykes put their BMWs in the top two spots, Laverty's pole position being his first in two years, with Jonathan Rea rounding out the front row. Alex Lowes, Garrett Gerloff and Michael van der Mark set up the second row, ahead of Michael Ruben Rinaldi, Loris Baz and Chaz Davies. Scott Redding ended the session in tenth place, three spots above returning Toprak Razgatlioglu.
