2020 Barcelona MotoGP FP2 Result: Morbidelli From Gravel To Glory

With the surface warming up nicely for the second practice session, premier class riders had a good opportunity to fine tune race setup, but the wind didn’t help the cause much. Gravel traps didn’t see as much action as in the lightweight class but still caused some trouble for the likes of Franco Morbidelli, who lost the front at turn 10 halfway through proceedings and took time to rejoin. But when he did, he shot straight to the top of the timesheets with the first 1:39 time of the weekend. Copy-paste for Johann Zarco, who also went down at turn 5 in the initial stages and went on to chase the leader on his way to the second 1:39 time on the timesheets.

Brad Binder held onto top spot for a handful of minutes but eventually got demoted to third, by only a tenth of a second and holding back Maverick Vinales by two tenths. Takaaki Nakagami comes to the forefront for Honda in fifth, while Joan Mir dropped to sixth after he opened the time attack recital with eight minutes remaining. Pol Espargaro made a late jump in seventh place, ahead of a fairly impressive Alex Marquez, the Spaniards less than seven tenths off the lead on home soil.

Valentino Rossi and Alex Rins rounded out the top ten, although only the Italian has snatched a place on the provisional Q2 line-up. Fabio Quartararo and Andrea Dovizioso were the only riders not to improve their times from FP1 and it showed on the timesheets but the Petronas rider had the excuse of late technical issues stopping him from joining the time attack. While Quartararo’s FP1 benchmark was sufficient to keep him safely into the combined top ten, Dovizioso has more work to do on Saturday morning, much like Pecco Bagnaia in 20th place.
