2020 Barcelona Moto3 FP2 Result: Masia Leads Eventful Session

Although temperatures kept rising in Montmelo, the wind posed a challenge for the junior class and gravel traps at turns 3 and 10 in particular got a lot of airtime early on. Jaume Masia was the exception by sliding out at turn 7, but the Leopard rider went on to pick up the lead of the session in the final time attack, when he became one of the few riders to improve their FP1 times, while Darryn Binder also improved to come within three tenths of a second of the Spaniard. Carlos Tatay enjoyed the return on home soil and made a late jump into the top three, as the last rider to post a time within half a second of top spot.

After an early tumble at turn 1, Gabriel Rodrigo rejoined the action to climb into fourth, ahead of Raul Fernandez, who overcame a rodeo moment at turn 3 and remained fastest on the combined standings. Tony Arbolino led the way early on, before limping away from a high side at turn 10 but was back from medical checks just in time for the late time attack that saw him climb back into sixth. Stefano Nepa was seventh in the session but not quick enough to join the combined top 14, unlike Andrea Migno in eighth. Jeremy Alcoba went from outside the top 15 into ninth position on the last lap, but it was still not enough to progress on the combined standings.

John McPhee rounded out the top ten of the session despite an early tumble of his own at troublesome turn 10, while championship leader Albert Arenas finished 14th, although both riders’ final flying laps were slowed down when avoiding a crash in front of them. Despite ending the session outside the top 15, Romano Fenati, Filip Salac, Alonso Lopez, Niccolo Antonelli and Kaito Toba still held onto provisional top 14 positions on the combined standings. A notable absence was Celestino Vietti, the Italian also crashing out at turn 3 but the repair job was too big for him to be able to rejoin the session and he dropped to 18th by the checkered flag.
