World Supersport's second race of the weekend was seventeen laps of Catalunya with the title up for grabs for the second time this weekend.
Corentin Perolari, Lucas Mahias, Andrea Locatelli and Philipp Oettl led into turn one, as Can Oncu raised his hand at the back of the field only to be collected by Patrick Hobelsberger, the pair ending their weekend on the grid as a race escaped in front of them.
A few places swapped in the first lap, with Oettl coming out ahead, but Lucas Mahias set the fastest lap, a 1'45.944, in his campaign to get to the front and, at the start of lap three, he slipstreamed into turn one past Philipp Oettl and Corentin Perolari. On lap three, behind the leading group of six riders, Isaac Viñales set the fastest lap, a 1'45.907. Lucas Mahias maintained the lead, ahead of Oettl, Perolari, Raffaele De Rosa, Locatelli and Manuel Gonzales. On lap five, Locatelli barged past Perolari who left far too big a gap, Perolari recovering in sixth place as De Rosa and Gonzales followed Locatelli past him.
At the start of lap nine, Andrea Locatelli triggered a bit of chaos as he tried to take the lead into turn one, pushing Lucas Mahias onto the escape road at the chicane of turns one and two, but Locatelli went wide enough for Philipp Oettl to grab the lead. Mahias returned to the track in fourth place, behind Raffaele De Rosa. Corentin Perolari finally fell off the leading group, leaving five riders in the front group. A lap later, Locatelli took the lead back into turn one as Mahias passed De Rosa for third place. Manuel Gonzales was awarded a three second penalty for exceeding track limits one time too many, leaving only four riders in contention for podium places.
As Locatelli escaped in the lead, performing his usual trick a couple of laps later than usual, Mahias and Oettl swapped places a few times with Mahias finally tapping his tail as a signal for his teammate to settle in behind and give them both a chance to catch the leader.
Locatelli would not give them that opportunity and he eked out a lead of two seconds over the last few laps and was able to cross the line a world champion, taking his tenth victory in eleven races, in spite of missing out on the fastest lap for the first time of the year. On the victory lap, some hoarding was brought out for him to hide behind and he got changed into a brand new racing suit, white and gold with a few rainbow streaks, a suit that was most likely brought to the track to hopefully be worn for today's race, but yesterday's weather, and Andy Verdoïa, put paid to that plan. The team also fitted a new number one sticker above the 55 on the front.
Never before has a World Supersport title been won with such dominance, with the closest being Ayrton Badovini's Superstock Cup campaign in 2010, and it is unlikely that it'll happen any time soon.
Andrea Locatelli won the title with four races remaining and a 104-point lead over Lucas Mahias, turning his hardest battle of the year into another dominant victory.
