2020 Emilia-Romagna Moto3 FP3 Result: Vietti Steals The Record

Even by usual FP3 standards, Moto 3 kicked the show up a notch early in the morning, in a session that saw home boy Celestino Vietti improve on the lap record to go a whole half second faster than everyone. Ai Ogura eventually reduced that by a tenth, as he recovered 20 positions to secure a Q2 spot ahead of an improving Romano Fenati.

Raul Fernandez was a safe fourth, while a subdued Albert Arenas only progressed into Q2 positions in the final minute of the session, climbing into fifth position. Dennis Foggia was one of the handful of riders told off for irresponsible riding last weekend and was forced to sit out the final 15 minutes of FP3, meaning that the Leopard rider had to anticipate the shootout and snuck in a 1:41 time to ensure his participation in Q2 before the penalty was enforced. Jeremy Alcoba, Andrea Migno and Tatsuki Suzuki also made it safely into Q2, despite a late crash for the Italian, while Ayumu Sasaki snuck into the top ten at the last minute, after a late tumble of his own.

Sergio Garcia was the last rider to post a time in the 1:41s but almost eighth tenths off the lead, while rookie Barry Baltus surprised in 12th place. Stefano Nepa left it late to join the combined top 14 but when he did, he pushed John McPhee out of contention and into the Q1 battle. Despite finishing 18th in the session and serving a 15 min sit-out of his own, Jaume Masia had no worries about his place in Q2, as the Spaniard’s top time from Friday was enough to keep him fifth on the combined standings.

That wasn’t the case for Tony Arbolino, whose early time attack was halted by a yellow flag and his fastest time cancelled due to being set within the final 15 minutes that he was supposed to sit out. It was also an unfortunate morning for Gabriel Rodrigo, who first crashed at turn 3, which made him fall into the danger zone and then another tumble at turn 15 sealed the deal and placed him firmly in Q1.
