Raffaele De Rosa entered World Supersport Superpole knowing his qualifying wouldn't change his grid position as he would start the race from the pit lane as a penalty for crashing into Jules Cluzel last time out.
Lucas Mahias set the first benchmark with a 1'46.015, holding off Andrea Locatelli for a lap, but Isaac Viñales set a 1'45.968 as Mahias pitted in. Viñales improved with a 1'45.968 as most riders pitted in at the halfway mark.
Raffaele De Rosa, Steven Odendaal and Kyle Smith sat behind the leading three of Viñales, Mahias and Locatelli, until Corentin Perolari knocked them all down a place with a 1'45.734, but Locatelli wouldn't let that stand.
Andrea Locatelli went half a second quicker than the field with a 1'45.212, making a quarter second in the last sector alone. Manuel Gonzales slotted into second place as Locatelli ran off the track at turn five after losing the rear, recovering his rear slide to safely run into the kitty litter and make it back to the pits unscathed.
Raffaele De Rosa set the exact same time as Manuel Gonzales, a 1'45.544, putting himself in third place, and a lap later, he set an identical 1'45.544 to put him in second place, his second quickest time being identical to his quickest time. The confusing "check the rulebooks" place was resolved a lap later as De Rosa improved by five hundredths.
As the clock ticked down, a few riders put in their last hopeful laps, red lights scattered over the timing screens, and Lucas Mahias set a 1'44.989, two tenths ahead of an equally quick Corentin Perolari. However, normal service was resumed as Andrea Locatelli, in spite of meeting traffic at the end of the lap, set a 1'44.958 for the pole position.
Andrea Locatelli claimed his sixth pole position out of six tries, winning the Superpole award for 2020, ahead of Lucas Mahias and Corentin Perolari. Manuel Gonzales, Raffaele De Rosa and Philipp Oettl made up the second row, although Kyle Smith, an Englishman with local knowledge of the Spanish track, would benefit from De Rosa's penalty and be the sixth rider on the grid.
