World Superbike's debut race at Catalunya is twenty laps of the Barcelona track with the track at a 28ºC temperature. Alvaro Bautista and Michael Ruben Rinaldi, two of the lightest riders, chose to start with the SCX Superpole race tyre.
Jonathan Rea took the lead from pole position ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu, Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Scott Redding until Michael van der Mark took an ambitious dive from fifth place into turn one, shooting past the Ducatis of Redding and Rinaldi and meeting his teammate Razgatlioglu at the apex. Van der Mark carried a little too much pace in to the corner and pushed himself and Razgatlioglu wide, letting Rinaldi and Redding scoot past.
Razgatlioglu lost a few places, ending up behind Tom Sykes and Alvaro Bautista, while van der Mark recovered in fourth place. Scott Redding took second place from Michael Ruben Rinaldi into turn ten, a popular passing place. On lap two, Redding lost grip into turn four, letting Rinaldi past him. Rinaldi signalled to Redding to sit behind him to let him drag the pair up to Rea's lead. Jonathan Rea had other plans, setting the fastest lap, a 1'42.797, and cleared off into the distance, starting lap four with over a second of a lead. Michael van der Mark was alone in fourth place, with a fight for fifth behind him raging on between Alvaro Bautista, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Chaz Davies.
Chaz Davies got ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu but while he was doing that, Alvaro Bautista had escaped to hassle Michael van der Mark, waving his sticky SCX tyre at him on lap eight as he took fourth place from him.
On lap nine, Scott Redding had had enough of following Michael Ruben Rinaldi and took second place from him into turn one, over a second behind Jonathan Rea. Instead of closing up to the championship leader, Redding dropped a couple of tenths a lap until the gap to the leader was 2 seconds by lap twelve. At this point, Alvaro Bautista had dropped off Michael van der Mark with Chaz Davies and Toprak Razgatlioglu. Chaz Davies was the quickest man on track, the only rider in the same lap times as Rea in the lead, and on lap thirteen, turn ten, Davies took fifth place from van der Mark and started closing in on Bautista ahead of him, bringing van der Mark with him. Bautista's SCX tyre started to lose grip on lap fifteen and Davies still had plenty in reserve as Bautista overcooked turn one, letting Davies power past and take fourth place from him. A lap later, van der Mark passed him for fifth place as Davies charged through towards Rinaldi.
Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Alvaro Bautista both saw the longevity of the SCX tyre expire with a few laps to go. Chaz Davies took third place from Rinaldi into turn one of lap eighteen and van der Mark took fourth from him a lap later.
As the last laps ticked down, the leading four all had around two seconds of fresh air around them and were locked into their positions, with only fifth place left to be decided between Rinaldi and Bautista, and into the penultimate lap, Bautista and Rinaldi gently touched into the last corner, and Bautista took the lead into turn one, settling the last two places in the top six.
Jonathan Rea won KRT's home race ahead of the Ducatis of Scott Redding and Chaz Davies, with Michael van der Mark, Alvaro Bautista and Michael Ruben Rinaldi behind them. On his victory lap, Rea stopped to pay tribute to the injured Ana Carrasco, putting on one of her "RIDE LIKE A GIRL" shirts, emblazoned with the #pinkwarrior hashtag, and even opened the Parc Fermé interview in Spanish.
Rea extended his lead over Scott Redding to forty one points while third placed Chaz Davies moved into joint third place with Toprak Razgatlioglu seventy points off Redding's second place. Michael van der Mark and Michael Ruben Rinaldi kept their hopes alive in the fight for third place.
