The lightweight class got the battle for pole started in perfect conditions in Misano and the show saw various characters trade top spot through the 15 minutes of Q2. Ai Ogura started the session at the top of the timing screens before he got pushed out of the limelight by the likes of Tatsuki Suzuki and Gabriel Rodrigo but the Honda Team Asia rider fought back to grab his very first pole position with an exceptional final lap. Rodrigo was refused back to back poles at the very last minute but will start in the middle of the front row, ahead of last year’s Misano victor, Suzuki.
Despite being only fourth, Andrea Migno came within four hundredths of a second of pole, opening row two ahead of Q1 escapee Romano Fenati and a consistent Raul Fernandez. Celestino Vietti qualifies on the third row, where he will be joined by Jeremy Alcoba and Q1 leader Tony Arbolino. Filip Salac completed the top ten, only half a second off pole and opens the fourth row in the company of Sergio Garcia and Riccardo Rossi.
Albert Arenas made some late mistakes that saw him slide all the way down to 13th and will start the defence of his championship lead from the fifth row and under assault from Jaume Masia and Dennis Foggia. However, one of his main challengers, John McPhee, had a tough afternoon in Misano, suffering a light crash at turn four in the first half of Q2 and then struggled to do any better than 17th on the grid.
The likes of Darryn Binder, Niccolo Antonelli and Ayumu Sasaki missed out on Q2 and will have to make a fast start from the second half of the grid.
