Italians lead the way after the first session of free practice, Alex De Angelis topping the timesheets from Mattia Casadei and Matteo Ferrari. The Man From San Marino was a quarter of a second faster than Casadei, who had Ferrari hot on his heels, just thirteen thousandths of a second slower than him. Eric Granado was fifth quickest, while Dominique Aegerter, back from Moto2 duties replacing Jesko Raffin in the NTS RW Racing Team, was fifth quickest. The top ten were covered by just 1 second.
