Despite all the rain talk over the morning, the weather gave Moto3 riders a bit of respite for the beginning of the second practice session. That saw an early push for a Q2 worthy time but few men managed to improve their times from the morning, Gabriel Rodrigo and Dennis Foggia amongst those few but only climbing a few positions inside the top 14. Rain hit halfway through the session with a few drops here and there but enough to send riders back to their garage to see how the conditions evolved. John McPhee had edged ahead after the first outing and his one hundredth of a second advantage lasted to the checkered flag after a localised downpour at turn 3 completely stopped play in the final handful of minutes.
Rodrigo’s early progress put him second in the session, ahead of Jaume Masia, both riders within a tenth of a second of the leader. Foggia’s fastest time was two tenths off the lead, while Tony Arbolino completed the top five in FP2, while retaining top spot in the combined standings. Raul Fernandez was the lead KTM man in sixth position, ahead of Celestino Vietti and Tatsuki Suzuki, with championship leader Albert Arenas and Niccolo Antonelli completing the top ten.
The combined timesheets stayed nearly identical from FP1 and all the men above are set to join Q2 directly, provided the rain returns as predicted on Saturday morning, and the final men to join them there are teammates Ayumu Sasaki and Kaito Toba, together with Ai Ogura and Andrea Migno.
