2020 Austria Moto2 FP2 Result: Lowes Goes Even Faster

Although track conditions had improved significantly by the end of the premier class session, Moto2 went out with rain flags waving once again, the much lighter showers not stopping riders from chasing a fast time. It took them a little bit to improve on the morning’s benchmark but the final couple of minutes saw a few people threaten the combined standings, Sam Lowes in particular appearing eager to improve his own top time and keep a firm grip on the headlines of the day. The Marc VDS rider was the fastest man on Friday but only just, as Jorge Martin came within one hundredth of a second to secure second place in both FP2 and the combined timesheets.

Jake Dixon was another of the riders to find some improvements on their FP1 time and climbed into third in the session and a comfortable sixth overall. Augusto Fernandez kept close in fourth, with Joe Roberts also progressing to fifth and joining the combined top 14 positions. Xavi Vierge was the last rider to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the weather and find his way into provisional Q2 spots, while sixth in the session.

Jorge Navarro, Marcel Schrotter, Enea Bastianini and Aron Canet rounded out the top ten of FP2 but only the Spaniards kept their Q2 spots, with Bastianini and Schrotter failing to go any faster than FP1. If rain makes a comeback on Saturday morning, Tetsuta Nagashima, Stefano Manzi, Marco Bezzecchi, Remy Gardner, Luca Marini and Lorenzo Baldassarri will also head straight to Q2.
