2020 Brno Moto3 Qualifying Result: The Early Bird

The lightweight class opened the matinee performance for qualifying but it ended up with a somewhat anticlimactic plotline. Raul Fernandez might disagree, as the Spanish rider secured his first pole position in the world championship after posting a solid time early in Q2 that never got seriously challenged. The cat and mouse chase for a good tow opportunity meant that not many riders managed to improve on the second run, allowing Fernandez to keep top spot by two tenths of a second. Gabriel Rodrigo proved some consistency to climb into second, while Tatsuki Suzuki overcame a tricky start to his weekend to join the front row of the grid.

Ai Ogura continues to impress in fourth, opening the second row ahead of Dennis Foggia and prolific rookie Jeremy Alcoba. The championship leader will start tomorrow’s race from the third row, Albert Arenas being joined by Q1 leader Tony Arbolino and compatriot Romano Fenati. Rookie Yuki Kunii completed the top ten and heads the fourth row from Andrea Migno and Niccolo Antonelli – the trio over a second slower than the poleman.

While Darryn Binder’s 15th grid spot is hardly a surprise and, as he continues to prove, hardly a hindrance when it comes to the race, another high profile name missing from top positions was John McPhee. The Petronas rider failed to set a time in Q2 as he suffered a high side at turn 9 on his first flying lap and will be starting from 18th grid spot.
