2007 Misano FP2 Times - Day 2

Today's two-hour long session took place under dry conditions, with all the riders getting a chance to actually go out and learn the track. The session went mostly as expected, with a few surprises. Casey Stoner dominated once again, and though Valentino Rossi was close for most of the practice, in the last 15 minutes, Stoner turned up the heat and started lapping in the 1'34s, over half a second faster than the rest of the field. Rossi took back a little time on Stoner, but still ended half a second slower than Stoner's fastest time.

Ant West set the 3rd fastest time on his Kawasaki, as expected, with his experience of racing at the new track during the World Supersport race. In 4th place was the biggest surprise. Carlos Checa thrives under pressure, and now that it looks like the Spanish veteran could be out of a job next year, he has stepped up his game. Checa was constantly amongst the fastest riders, only losing out to Ant West in the dying minutes of the session.

Marco Melandri suffered another heavy crash during the early part of the session, which saw the Italian sidelined for some time while he visited the Clinica Mobile, but he returned to compete in the session, finally setting the 15th fastest time. Qualifying practice will take place at the usual time, 1:50 pm local time (CEST).

Brno Post-Race Test - Day 2 Times

Testing continued at Brno on Tuesday, though it got off to a very slow start due to the rain that had fallen overnight. If there's one man that isn't afraid of the rain, it's Anthony West, and so the Australian Kawasaki rider was the first out on the slowly drying track. Once the track dried sufficiently, he was joined by 13 other riders who had stayed on to test. West also spent some time testing qualifying tires, as this was his first opportunity to test the qualifiers outside of an actual qualifying session.

At Yamaha, Valentino Rossi spent time testing the new engine with pneumatic valves, but the new power plant clearly still needs development, as Rossi only managed the 11th fastest time. Rossi also spent a lot of time testing new Michelin tires, none of which provided the necessary step forward.

For Casey Stoner, service continued as normal, the Australian being fastest on both days. The fastest three times were all set by Bridgestone-shod riders, with Stoner finishing ahead of John Hopkins and Randy de Puniet. Nicky Hayden set the 4th fastest time, as fastest Michelin rider.

Testing is now completed, and the circus packs up to move on to Misano, where the next round of racing takes place on September 2nd.

2007 Brno FP3 Times - Day 2

Casey Stoner and John Hopkins were once again far and away the fastest riders on the track at Brno this morning, leading the timesheets within the first 10 minutes of practice, and staying there all the way to the end. Stoner was fastest by a small margin for most of the session, until 2 minutes from the end, the Australian Ducati man destroyed the existing lap record, set by Loris Capirossi last year. Suzuki's John Hopkins was the only man who could stay within range of Stoner, and the only other man capable of consistently running 1'58 second laps, which looks like being race pace.

The Yamaha men suffered very mixed fortunes, with Colin Edwards finishing in 4th spot, behind Kawasaki's Randy de Puniet, but Valentino Rossi way down in 12th position, nearly 2 seconds slower than the man he has to beat if he is to keep a chance at the title. Unless the team find something this afternoon, Rossi could be in serious trouble tomorrow.

The top men's team mates, Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen, also put on a strong showing all session, with Sylvain Guintoli once again popping into the top 10, taking 7th spot using a set of qualifiers. The Repsol Honda team mates finished in 8th and 9th spot, with Nicky Hayden faster than Dani Pedrosa for much of the session, the Spaniard only nipping ahead of the reigning world champion during the final minutes of the session.

Marco Melandri was once again absent, presumably still not fit to ride as a result of the nerve problems which reared their heads yesterday. It must be doubtful whether he will be able to race on Sunday.

2007 Brno FP2 Times - Day 1

The day's second free practice session took place under overcast skies, though it stayed dry throughout. And the fastest two men of the morning's practice were fastest once again for most of the afternoon. But this time, Casey Stoner didn't dominate the session like he had in the morning. In fact, it wasn't until 10 minutes from the end that Stoner finally managed to better the time set by Suzuki's John Hopkins. Once faster, though, he proceeded to set a series of blistering laps within half a second of the existing lap record set by Loris Capirossi during last year's race.

Stoner looked like having the fastest time of the session in the bag, until 5 minutes before the end, when we were treated to a real surprise. Sylvain Guintoli, aboard the Tech 3 Yamaha, put a Dunlop qualifier on the bike and put in a blistering lap to take 2nd spot from John Hopkins. A couple of minutes later, as the clock ticked down to the session's end, Guintoli went out again with another qualifier, and this time, took 2/10ths of a second off Stoner's time, to set the fastest time of the session. Guintoli had made clever use of the advantage which the Dunlops offer, not being subject to the tire quotas, as the company has not won a MotoGP race in recent history. His time will mean little come qualifying practice tomorrow, but today's performance is a major publicity coup.

This left Stoner down in 2nd, ahead of Hopkins in 3rd, with Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet 1/10th apart in 4th and 5th. Capirossi has a couple of fast laps, but was far from consistent, while de Puniet was constantly to be found near the top of the timesheets.

The first of the Michelin men was Valentino Rossi in 6th place, ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden. Rossi had struggled all session, sitting around 8th for much of practice, while Pedrosa was more consistent in his times. Nicky Hayden had started badly, but found a burst of speed in the last 10 minutes.

Guintoli's team mate Makoto set the 9th fastest time, also on a Dunlop qualifier, but was unlucky to get stuck in traffic on his fast lap. Hopper's team mate Chris Vermeulen rounded out the top 10.

There was one name missing from this afternoon's session, and that was Marco Melandri. The Italian, who is still suffering with a broken ankle sustained at Laguna Seca, had finished 15th in the first session of the day, 5 places down from his similarly injured team mate Toni Elias.
