2008 Irta Test Jerez Day 3 Times FP4 Final - Hayden Finds A Flier

The final day of testing at Jerez started blustery but dry, the wind thankfully drying the track out quickly whenever showers passed over. Once the sun came out early in the afternoon, the track soon dried out completely, and the many riders who had stayed inside all morning were quick to come out and get some laps in.

The enforced inaction was not good for everyone. James Toseland, for one, took a nasty tumble on just his 2nd lap out of the pits, badly twisting his ankle. Despite his injury, Toseland rejoined the session after a visit to the Clinica Mobile, eventually finishing the day with the 6th fastest time.

The Michelins dominated the timesheet at the end of the day, with Nicky Hayden setting an incredibly fast time, 0.2 seconds faster than the existing pole record, and equaling the time he set here during testing in November, which was itself 0.3 seconds slower than the time Dani Pedrosa set at the same session.

Hayden's time was indicative of the quality of the Michelin qualifiers: the top 4 times were all set on French rubber, with Valentino Rossi the first rider on Bridgestones in 5th place. Rossi finished over 3/10ths of a second time on his Michelin-shod team mate, the rookie Jorge Lorenzo.

Casey Stoner, winner of the BMW Z4 on Sunday, only finished with the 7th fastest time, but still managed some impressive laps in the 1'40 bracket on race rubber. Stoner is sitting very pretty indeed for the start of the new season, the Australian consistently either the fastest or one of the fastest riders of each session.

The same cannot be said of the other Ducati riders. Stoner's team mate Melandri could only manage the 14th fastest time, sandwiched between the two satellite Ducatis of Sylvain Guintoli and Toni Elias. Both Melandri and Elias have been very disappointing, struggling during just about every session of testing so far.

Over in sick bay, both John Hopkins and Dani Pedrosa rode today, after missing most, or in Pedrosa's case, all, of Sunday's practice sessions. But both riders took it easy, with Pedrosa only running 36 laps, while Hopper could manage just 21 full laps, the Spaniard finishing down in 16th, while the American finished a lowly 18th.

With one last test to go, at Qatar, to train under the floodlights, the season is very nearly upon us. Just a few short weeks to go.

2008 Irta Test Jerez Day 2, FP2 Times, 1pm - Rain Shakes The Field Up

The rain in Spain has been falling mainly on the track at Jerez today, turning up a few of the usual wet weather suspects. Suzuki's Chris Vermeulen shone as always in the rain, with Casey Stoner also putting in a strong performance. Dani Pedrosa decided to sit this morning's session out, not wishing to risk further injuring his recovering hand.

With the rain still falling, the list of candidates for the BMW Z4 has been shuffled around. Vermeulen and his compatriot Ant West have to be taken into consideration, as both Australians are fantastic in the wet. But Casey Stoner isn't too shabby either, as his display at Donington proved, and Colin Edwards is another man to watch, as the Texan won himself a BMW sports car the last time the IRTA qualifying session was run in the rain, at Catalunya in 2006.

Sepang Jan '08 Test Day 3 Times - Hayden Smashes Circuit Record

The final day of testing at Sepang threw up a few surprises to add to the drama of the first two days. The biggest surprise was the return of Nicky Hayden to the top of the timesheets, after a couple of days ending mid-pack. The Kentucky Kid's was back with a vengeance, shattering Valentino Rossi's circuit lap record by nearly 3/10ths of a second.

Hayden wasn't the only rider to smash records, both Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner went faster than the race lap record on race tires today, proving beyond any doubt that the 800s are already faster than the old 990s were.

Casey Stoner also came close to Rossi's circuit lap record on qualifiers, setting the 2nd fastest time of the day, after being blisteringly fast on race tires. Behind Stoner, the Yamahas continued their strong form, with rookie and 250 world champion Jorge Lorenzo putting in yet another strong time to take 3rd fastest, ahead of Colin Edwards on the Tech 3 M1.

John Hopkins was 5th fastest, getting the Kawasaki up to speed quickly, making his switch to Team Green look like a very savvy move. Behind Hopkins, Valentino Rossi was 6th fastest, nearly 3/4 of a second slower than his rookie team mate Lorenzo. Andrea Dovizioso was fastest of the satellite Hondas, ahead of James Toseland on the other Tech 3 Yamaha. Toseland got off to a slow start in Malaysia, but has steadily climbed up the timesheets day by day.

Toseland's climb is in contrast to the slide of the Suzukis. Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi started the test near the front, but have failed to find the improvements that the rest of the field have managed.

But the big loser from the test is once again Marco Melandri. Melandri, like Capirossi before him, is struggling to find his feet on the Ducati GP8, and must be disappointed to only manage the 14th fastest time. And it's not just Melandri: the satellite Ducatis of Toni Elias and Sylvain Guintoli are also way down the field. The Ducati is surely an incredibly fast bike, but so far, only Casey Stoner seems capable of taming the beast.

Testing continues next week at Phillip Island in Australia.
