After a long wait to resume action, the intermediate class stepped onto the hot surface of the Circuit of Jerez and challenged for the lead of their first practice session in over four months. SKY Racing stole the show for much of the proceedings, with Marco Bezzecchi leading the way early on, before teammate Luca Marini took over for the final time attack and patiently watched the final few minutes from the comfort of his garage.
Jorge Navarro settled for second but only half a tenth behind Marini, while Bezzecchi in third was over three tenths down. The championship leader saw his final lap time cancelled due to exceeding track limits but Tetsuta Nagashima's early achievement was good enough for fourth in FP1. Marcel Schrotter joined the top five, with Sam Lowes seemingly recovered, well settled in the Marc VDS squad and up in sixth on his first proper outing for the squad.
Jorge Martin, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Joe Roberts and Hafizh Syahrin shared the rest of the top ten, although Tom Luthi in 11th position was still within half a second of the leader. The class veteran might have improved his time had it not been for a late and quite bizarre crash at turn one. Qatar podium men Lorenzo Baldassarri and Enea Bastianini lingered in the provisional top 14 but will hope to progress some more throughout the weekend.
