2020 Qatar Moto2 Qualifying Result: Better Than Fight Club

Qualifying in Qatar was a sweet preview of what to expect from the intermediate class in 2020 and the first fastest man of the decade proved to be Joe Roberts. With the pole record falling a couple minutes into Q2, no one handled the pressure better than Roberts, who followed through with the speed he showed in practice to convert it into the first American pole position in the intermediate class in a decade. Luca Marini came painfully close to pole himself, posting an identical time to Roberts but losing out on account of their second fastest laptimes. Enea Bastianini steps into the new season on a high, closing the front row of the grid one tenth slower than the leaders.

Jorge Navarro fought through Q1 and looked like the man to beat at the start of Q2 but, unfortunately for him, beaten he was. However, the Spaniard still starts in a prime position at the top of row two. Bo Bendsneyder continues to impress by placing his NTS kit in fifth spot on the grid, while Remy Gardner turned a physically painful Friday into a second row start from sixth position.

After Marco Bezzecchi gave a helping hand in his teammate’s near-pole, he got some help in return in securing seventh on the grid. The Italian opens row three ahead of familiar company from a resilient Jorge Martin and Q1 escapee Lorenzo Baldassarri. Xavi Vierge completed the top ten and together with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Augusto Fernandez, fills in row four. Marcel Schrotter might have topped Q1 but that only got him as high as 13th at the end of the day, whilst rookie Aron Canet lost a bit of steam after an excellent showing in practice and will have to start 16th. The Spaniard will still not be as disillusioned as Tom Luthi, whose crashes in practice seem to have contributed to his 18th starting position.

Glad to see Roberts backup his speed from yesterday and prove that it wasn't a one-off. Hopefully he can show well tomorrow and keep this form going throughout the season. It's been way too long since there was a young American performing at the top in the Grand Prix paddock.
