2020 Portimao World Superbike Race Two Result: Turn Five Takes Its Toll On The Title

On a windy and hot afternoon, 22 riders lined up for 20 laps of Portimao. Eight of them would crash but eighteen would finish.

Jonathan Rea led Toprak Razgatlioglu, Loris Baz and Scott Redding into the first turn, with Redding taking third place from Baz. Alex Lowes, Michael van der Mark and Eugene Laverty lined up behind Baz, but Laverty crashed out at turn five, picking his bike up to rejoin at the back of the pack. Loris Baz then slid out at the high-speed last turn, ending what was up to this point an excellent weekend. 

After Redding took second place into turn one, the front three broke away from Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark and Jonathan Rea set the fastest lap. A lap later, Rea improved the fastest lap with a 1'42.941 and started to clear off into the distance. 

At the start of lap five, Rea had over a second of a lead, with Redding, Razgatlioglu, Lowes and van der Mark grouping together in a fight for second. Seven laps in, Toprak Razgatlioglu fell at turn five, losing third place and thirteen seconds, as he recovered in fourteenth place. A lap later, Alex Lowes followed suit, remounting but dropping his limping bike off at his garage instead of continuing.

Michael van der Mark closed on Scott Redding's second place, but couldn't keep up the pace and dropped back a few tenths. In fourth place, Chaz Davies held off Leon Haslam and Michael Ruben Rinaldi with Alvaro Bautista across the gap in seventh place. On lap twelve, Leon Haslam fell victim to turn five and had to pick up his stranded Honda to return to the race. 

Scott Redding's tyre started to go off, in a now-familiar way, and Michael van der Mark made hay while the runner shone, closing at a rate of four tenths of a second a lap until lap fourteen. Scott Redding took turn five wide and van der Mark snuck underneath him. Redding closed his line but found a Yamaha exactly where he hoped to put his Ducati. He conceded second place to van der Mark but kept the pressure on. Van der Mark found a false neutral later in the lap and Redding capitalised on it to take second place back, now over four seconds behind Jonathan Rea. Van der Mark's tyres now caught up with Redding's and they matched lap times.

On lap sixteen, Garrett Gerloff went wide, and as he closed his turn, he met Xavi Fores on the apex and the pair clashed. Fores crashed out but Gerloff was able to resume in eleventh place. Toprak Razgatlioglu was in ninth place and closing on Federico Caricasulo at a terrifying rate of knots, taking eighth place a lap before the end. 

On the last couple of laps, Redding held second place, matching every effort van der Mark made, with the pair never further apart than four tenths of a second. 

Jonathan Rea won by over five seconds, but there was less than a tenths of a second at the flag between Scott Redding in second and Michael van der Mark in third place. Chaz Davies finished just under four seconds later with Alvaro Bautista almost two seconds behind him. Michael Ruben Rinaldi capitalised on Loris Baz's absence to finish top independent riders in sixth place. 

Jonathan Rea now leads the championship, but only by four points as Scott Redding's hard fought second place keeps him within four points of the championship leader. Michael van der Mark's third place keeps him in fifth place behind Alex Lowes while Toprak's recovery in eighth place on track keeps him in third place in the championship, losing twelve points to Redding.

2020 Brno MotoGP Race Result: A Flurry Of Fantastic Firsts

The challenges posed by the track surface in Brno mixed with a fairly entertaining qualifying session made any predictions for the premier class race very difficult but none of them could have foreseen the eventual podium in the Czech Republic. It was a momentous day for KTM, who celebrated their first victory in MotoGP after 40 minutes of pure magic from Brad Binder, who became the first rookie winner in the premier class since the reigning world champion. For much of the race it looked like it was going to be Franco Morbidelli’s time to shine and shine he did, but instead of victory, he more calmly celebrated his maiden podium in MotoGP. In a day of firsts, Johann Zarco had the most eventful afternoon of the lot but still managed to bring home the very first podium for the Esponsorama/Avintia crew.

The poleman’s race kicked off with a pretty shocking start, Zarco getting swallowed by the sharks off the line, while Petronas took control at the front. Fabio Quartrarao reached turn one first but found himself second to Morbidelli by turn two. Aleix Espargaro made a fine start to join the top three ahead of brother Pol and was soon attacking Quartararo for second. By the time the Frenchman found a way back past on the Aprilia, Morbidelli had extended a gap of over one second at the front. Meanwhile, Pol Espargaro was getting roughed up by teammate Binder and a quickly recovering Zarco. Missing in action on lap one were Maverick Vinales down to 8th and Valentino Rossi in 10th, while Takaaki Nakagami and Andrea Dovizioso were making steady progress from their lowly qualifying positions, knocking on the doors of the top ten by the third lap.

While Quartararo was chasing down his teammate, Binder was hounding Aleix Espargaro to claim a provisional podium spot and Zarco followed the South African’s example, leaving Aleix to scrap it out with his brother for fifth position. By lap four, Quartararo had to switch focus from pursuing Morbidelli to defending his position from a feisty Binder, leaving Zarco and Pol behind. Pol eventually found a way past the poleman on lap six and went in pursuit of his teammate, with one second to recover on the podium battle. Aleix Espargaro looked like he decisively lost touch with the main contenders and tried to keep Rins and Rossi at bay, while Vinales, Nakagami and Dovizioso’s progress had stalled towards the bottom of the top ten.

Morbidelli’s gap was still safe by lap 8 but Quartararo and Binder had more company as Pol and Zarco had tagged to the back of them. Binder made the first move, picking up the chase at turn 3 but Pol did not want to let his teammate go too far and also found his way past Quartararo soon after. However, taking a few wide corners put him in the path of Zarco and a slight nudge from the Avintia man saw the Spaniard disappointingly slide out at turn 1. With 12 laps remaining and as the incident was being investigated, Zarco made his move on a somewhat fading Quartararo and had one second to find to catch up on Binder.

Clear of any challengers, Binder pushed to reduce Morbidelli’s gap no near nothing with 10 laps remaining and made his move for the lead one lap later. The KTM man quickly found a half second gap on the Yamaha, while Zarco was drawing closer too but was slapped with a long lap penalty for irresponsible riding. The Frenchman danced on the dusty white line of the penalty lane to keep ahead of Quartararo and successfully did so but lost touch with the duo ahead.

Binder looked comfortable in the lead, but his 1.5 second gap wasn’t fully safe from Morbidelli yet, while Zarco was unperturbed in third and Quartararo came under attack from Rins, with Rossi waiting in the wings. Despite struggling with his tyre choice, Quartararo did not make it easy for the Spaniard to get past and it took until the final five laps for Rins to make a decisive move. Rossi had an easier time in overtaking the Petronas rider, who was going backwards and soon allowed Oliveira past. His saving grace was that the next group led by Nakagami was almost four seconds behind.

With four laps to go, Binder had an impressive three second advantage at the front and increased that further by the checkered flag to take a historic first win for himself and KTM. Morbidelli came home safely in second, while Zarco got pushed to the very end by Rins. Despite pretty severe tyre trouble, the Avintia man held on to keep his podium position, with Rins a commendable fourth. Rossi joined the top five ahead of Oliveira, with Quartararo fading to seventh position. Nakagami, Jack Miller and Aleix Espargaro completed the top ten, while Dovizioso in 11th and Vinales in 14th position had a very tough day at the office.

Despite the difficult afternoon, Quartararo extends his championship lead due to his rivals’ even worse headache, leading the way by 17 points from Vinales. Morbidelli makes a massive jump in the standings to trail his teammate by 28 points, similarly to Dovizioso. Binder heads to KTM’s home race in fifth place, 31 points down on Quartararo and tied on points with Zarco.

2020 Portimao World Supersport Race Two Result: No Delays

World Supersport race two was seventeen laps of a 31ºC Portimao.

Corentin Perolari got the hole shot to take the lead from pole sitter Andrea Locatelli, Jules Cluzel and Isaac Viñales. Lucas Mahias crashed out on turn two, ending his race. Cluzel prised Locatelli off the apex and loved his way to second place. Viñales followed him through and Locatelli was relegated to fourth place.

At the start of lap two, Cluzel took the lead down the straight while Locatelli dispatched Viñales to recover third place with Philipp Oettl right behind them. Lap three, Locatelli steamed past Perolari and set the fastest lap, a 1'45.698. Isaac Viñales passed Corentin Perolari, taking third place, a second behind Locatelli in second.

Seven laps in, Jules Cluzel and Andrea Locatelli had a two second lead over Isaac Viñales who started to break free of Corentin Perolari. A second behind, Steven Odendaal led Raffaele De Rosa and Philipp Oettl. Oettl and De Rosa swapped places a few times over the next couple of laps and by lap nine, De Rosa closed up the gap turning the battle for fourth place a five-rider scrap.

Andrea Locatelli took the lead midway through lap nine but Jules Cluzel stuck with him and held on for as long as possible. Two seconds behind, Isaac Viñales held a secure third place. As the race progressed, Steven Odendaal left the four riders behind him and Raffaele De Rosa lost the front round turn five of lap twelve. 

Manuel Gonzales joined Corentin Perolari and Philipp Oettl and the three battled lap after lap right to the end of the race.

Eventually, Cluzel just had to manage his lead over Viñales and let Locatelli take his fifth win out of five races, not understanding how the championship leader is so much quicker.

Behind third-placed Isaac Viñales, his first podium of the year, Steven Odendaal took a quiet fourth place seven second clear of the brawl for fifth, won by Philipp Oettl, ahead of Manuel Gonzales, Corentin Perolari and a late arrival of Hannes Soomer. 

Locatelli's unbroken run of fastest laps, pole positions and wins puts him decisively at the head of the championship, with Cluzel describing himself as "the best of the rest" thirty five points behind. In spite of his crash, Lucas Mahias remains in third place.

2020 Brno Moto2 Race Result: Tales Of Redemption

The critical track conditions in Brno did not make for the most entertaining battle in Moto2 but the outcome of the 19 laps was a welcome relief for all the men who made the podium. Enea Bastianini demonstrated that he does have consistency in his toolkit by taking control of the race going into turn one at the start and riding a perfect race to secure back to back wins and grab the championship lead. Sam Lowes had an occasional sniff at victory but had to be happy with second, making a long awaited return to the podium. Speaking of long waits, the United States made a comeback to the podium of the intermediate class after 27 years, courtesy of a fine ride from Joe Roberts, who turned pole position into a maiden podium, with third place in Brno.

Despite starting from pole, Roberts did not get to enjoy much time in clear air, as Bastianini made an outstanding launch off the line and headed first into turn one, ahead of Roberts and Lowes, who were getting hounded by Jorge Martin early on. While Roberts, Lowes and Martin were swapping paint to decide who to chase down the leader, Bastianini had stretched a gap of nearly one second in one lap. Meanwhile, Tetusa Nagahsima, the championship leader heading into the race, had joined the top 12, having started 20th.

By lap five, Lowes designated himself to reel in Bastianini and was steadily bringing the gap down, with Roberts starting to struggle to hang onto the British rider. Martin was already over a second back on the podium contenders and had a handful of challengers behind him, including Marco Bezzecchi, Luca Marini and Augusto Fernandez. A more sizeable group was engaging in battle over two seconds back, led by a convalescent Marcel Schrotter.

At the mid point of the race, Lowes had reduced the gap to Bastianini to half a second but struggled to get any closer, while Roberts was consistently one second behind. Nearly three seconds down the road, Marini took control of the chasing group and fought to draw nearer to podium positions, taking teammate Bezzecchi and Fernandez along for the ride but dropping Martin.

The status quo was maintained for the next few laps, with no significant progress made amongst the top scoring positions, but Lowes was still just close enough to hope for better than second. Those hopes looked dashed in the final four laps, when Bastianini’s advantage grew back to over a second but Lowes applied some more pressure on the final lap – too little too late and the Marc VDS rider had to settle for second. An ecstatic Roberts took the checkered flag five seconds later but safely in the final podium spot and almost three seconds ahead of Marini. Fernandez joined the top five, followed by Bezzecchi and an anonymous Jorge Navarro. Martin, Hafizh Syahrin and Aron Canet rounded out the top ten positions, while Nagashima got stuck in 11th spot after the progress he made early in the race.

Back to back victories bring Bastianini the championship lead, 15 points ahead of Marini and 18 ahead of Nagashima. Lowes climbs a few spots into fourth, 27 points down on the leader.

2020 Portimao World Superbike Superpole Race Result: Spend Them Tyres

The ten lap Superpole race would determine the grid positions for race two this afternoon. 

Jonathan Rea launched into the lead from pole position, ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu, Loris Baz and Tom Sykes, in spite of Razgatlioglu briefly leading into turn one, overcooking the entry and recovering behind Rea. On the second lap, Jonathan Rea rabbited at the front, setting a fastest lap of 1'41.371, dragging Razgatlioglu with him as the leading pair left Baz in charge of the fight for third place. 

As Sykes dropped back a few places, further back, Chaz Davies and Eugene Laverty had a coming together at turn five. Behind Baz, Alex Lowes held off Scott Redding, Tom Sykes and Michael van der Mark. Redding came under a bit of pressure, but that was soon lifted as Sykes and van der Mark slowed each other up swapping back and forth at turn five to give Redding some breaking room. 

At the halfway mark, Jonathan Rea broke the bubble of air between himself and Toprak Razgatlioglu and started to stretch out a lead. Loris Baz in third place was over two seconds behind the leading duo with Alex Lowes unable to make any headway to third place. Redding, Sykes and van der Mark couldn't change their order, but behind them, Michael Rinaldi started causing problems for Leon Haslam, keeping him on his toes until the end of the race.

With the riders all going flat out with plenty of tyre left at the end, there were almost no overtakes in the last few laps, and there were no surprises at the front.

Jonathan Rea won with Toprak Razgatlioglu not far behind. Loris Baz took the last step of the podium, his first top three result since 2014, setting the front row for race two. Alex Lowes, Scott Redding and Tom Sykes made up the second row while the third row would be Michael van der Mark ahead of Michael Rinaldi who pipped ninth-placed Leon Haslam at the flag. 

Scott Redding still leads the championship, bit Jonathan Rea;s victory slashed his lead to just one point. Toprak Razgatlioglu maintains third place, ahead of Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark. Sixth-placed Chaz Davies, scoring no points and not putting himself in the top nine for race two, has Loris Baz, fresh off the podium, just eight points behind him in seventh.

This afternoon's race could see changes throughout the top ten of the championship.

2020 Brno Moto3 Race Result: Back In The Limelight

It was a beautiful day in Brno as the lightweight class lined up for what promised to be a feisty 18 laps in the heat of the Czech Republic. We were spared of the usual chaos but there were several notable performances in the podium battle, in particular the impeccable race ran by Dennis Foggia on his way to victory. The Italian took control of proceedings early on and defended beautifully when faced with various challengers, including championship leader Albert Arenas, who fought through the pain barrier to climb onto the podium in second position. The final podium spot went to Ai Ogura and it helped him become Arenas’ main threat in the championship standings.

Despite having started seventh on the grid, Arenas was in the mix straight away and took the lead from a fast starting Gabriel Rodrigo by the end of lap one. An unsettled Rodrigo found himself mercilessly swallowed by the pack and the Japanese tag team of Tatsuki Suzuki and Ogura picked up the task of chasing the championship leader, whose advantage had increased to nearly a second by lap two. That gap did not last long and poleman Raul Fernandez was soon on his tail and attempting an attack. Tony Arbolino, Suzuki and Ogura were some of the other headliners in the early stages of the race but the lead group was still sizeable, including John McPhee, who had joined the top ten by lap four, having started 18th.

The lead changed hands for the first time on lap six, when Foggia used the acceleration of his Honda to take control of the pack and give Arenas a challenge. The hierarchy settled for the next few laps, while the pace slowed down significantly, but Arenas and Arbolino continued sniffing around the lead Italian. Lap ten saw Suzuki abandon the fight at turn 10, leaving a ten-man group to settle the podium positions, with Ogura, McPhee, Jaume Masia, Jeremy Alcoba, Fernandez, Niccolo Antonelli and Romano Fenati also hanging out with the leaders, two seconds ahead of the chasing pack.

Despite still suffering the effects of the crash he had at the last round, Arenas was still holding on to victory hopes as the race entered the final five laps, behind Foggia and Arbolino and fending off Masia, Ogura and McPhee. Four other men were tagging along to the podium contenders but had nothing to contribute to that battle just yet. Arbolino looked like Foggia’s main threat but a nudge from Arenas helped him go from second to last in the lead group with three laps remaining. Masia inherited the task of chasing his teammate but made a costly mistake and slid out of contention by the end of that same lap.

Foggia entered the final lap under pressure from Ogura but the Japanese rider could not find a way past the Italian and it left him vulnerable to attack from Arenas, who snatched second away from the Honda rider. Antonelli was best of the rest in fourth, ahead of McPhee and poleman Fernandez. Alcoba, Arbolino and Fenati also finished within the lead group, while Stefano Nepa rounded out the top ten, crossing the finish line seven seconds later.

2020 Portimao World Supersport Race One Result: Delayed Start Doesn't Dampen Prospects

The World Supersport race start was delayed by over an hour, until the medical helicopter could return after the crash at end of the World Superbike race. As the day dragged on, the weather didn't turn and the seventeen lap race could start after a quick start procedure. 

Corentin Perolari and Jules Cluzel got the jump on Andrea Locatelli into the first turn, with Lucas Mahias, Philipp Oettl and Isaac Viñales behind them. Perolari and Cluzel swapped places around the first lap, but as the GMT94 teammates charged down the straight, Locatelli tucked into the soft air behind them and passed both of them into turn one for the lead. Cluzel and Locatelli then chopped back and forth for the lead, and Locatelli set the fastest lap, a 1'46.761, fending off his title rival. 

The leading six riders had a two second gap after just two laps, as the lead changed again, with Locatelli going wide into turn eleven giving Cluzel the opportunity to take the lead from him. Cluzel then set the fastest lap of 1'46.404 as he tried to capitalise on his lead.

The leading four riders, Jules Cluzel, Andrea Locatelli, Corentin Perolari and Lucas Mahias, started breaking away from Isaac Viñales and Philipp Oettl and Locatelli once again took the lead only to have Cluzel to outbreak him into turn one of lap five for the lead. Lucas Mahias carried his speed down the hill to sweep under Corentin Perolari, only for the pair to swap places to lose the leading two. Mahias then signalled to Perolari to stick with him to close the gap. 

Jules Cluzel and Andrea Locatelli both set the fastest lap as they crossed the line, with Locatelli once again taking the lead into turn one after setting a 1'46.251 lap. Mahias, Perolari and Viñales were over two seconds behind the leading pair seven laps in. Mahias kept charging but Perolari got into a fight with Viñales a second behind. 

Andrea Locatelli was trying to break away from Jules Cluzel, as he has done every chance he's had this year, but Cluzel kept within four tenths of a second lap after lap as the pair kept the hammer down. Locatelli gained a tenth then lost it as they passed half race distance, while Lucas Mahias, over three seconds behind, was in a comfortable third place as Corentin Perolari and Isaac Viñales, three seconds behind Mahias, were caught by the late-race specialist Raffaele De Rosa. On lap twelve, Locatelli finally broke free of Cluzel and De Rosa took fourth place, passing both Perolari and Viñales as they were distracted by each other into turn one. 

At the start of lap thirteen, Locatelli lost half a second of his lead as Cluzel caught back up, but in catching up, Cluzel crashed out at turn five, losing the front and having to pick his bike up to rejoin. Cluzel rejoined in sixth place, four seconds behind Perolari and closing, but with only four laps left. 

Three laps from the end, Locatelli had a seven and a half second lead over Lucas Mahias with Raffaele De Rosa a further four seconds behind with Isaac Viñales and Corentin Perolari challenging him for the last step of the podium. Viñales kept the pressure on De Rosa and the pair crossed the line to start the last lap at the same time. 

Andrea Locatelli won decisively, ahead of Lucas Mahias, but the battle for third place was hard fought, with Isaac Viñales taking third from Raffaele De Rosa ahead of Corentin Perolari before the last sector, a long sequence of right handers, only to have all three riders charging down the straight together. Raffaele De Rosa powered past Isaac Viñales and dragged Corentin Perolari with him. De Rosa took third ahead of Perolari and Viñales as under two hundredths of a second separated there trio. Jules Cluzel finished in sixth place a few seconds later. 

Andrea Locatelli won his fourth race of the year, extending his championship lead over Jules Cluzel to 30 points. Lucas Mahias closed to within eight points of Cluzel while Raffaele De Rosa once again got his first podium of the year, with is previous third place being removed for a technical infringement.
