2019 Phillip Island MotoGP Tire Test: Marquez Quickest As New Michelin Passes Muster

Michelin got what they asked for at the special 20-minute tire test at Phillip Island, with a dry track and enough riders putting the 11 laps or more asked by Michelin on the new construction rear tire to provide useful data. The tire had already been tested at Barcelona, but Michelin needed to have it tested at a track with very high tire stresses before they could introduce it to the 2020 allocation. It all worked out perfectly for the test on Friday afternoon.

Though times were published, the timing should not be taken to mean too much, as it was a test of endurance rather than speed. Nevertheless, Marc Marquez ended the test as fastest, with a time that was a little under the race pace being set on used tires in FP2. Andrea Iannone impressed in second, posting a quick lap on the Aprilia, while FP2 fastest Maverick Viñales was third quickest, just ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.

The fans who stayed for the extra 20 minutes were rewarded for their patience. Towards the end of the session, Marc Marquez pulled off one of his signature saves at MG. The front folded completely underneath him, Marc Marquez held the bike up on his elbow and knee, waiting patiently for the front to bite again, despite the bike being at a 70° angle. It finally bit, and Marquez could ride off, to loud applause from the crowd.

Velocity on the main straight was up by two or three kilometres per hour for many of the bikes during the 20 minute tire test. Interesting if this continues next year. More speed is always better, doesn't always improve the lap time. Or should I say the fastest bike in a straight line doesn't always produce the best lap time.
