2019 Portimao World Superbike Superpole Result: Nice Weather For It

Jonathan Rea goes into Superpole with an eighty one point lead in the championship and the fastest time from free practice, with Alvaro Bautista second in both.

After one lap on race tyres, Alvaro Bautista set a 1'41.326, setting toe quickest time of the weekend. Toprak Razgatlioglu and Sandro Cortese held off fourth-quickest Jonathan Rea before they pitted in. After a quick pit in, Bautista headed back out and was three tenths off while most quick riders sat in their garages.

With just over ten minutes of the allocated twenty five remaining, Jonathan Rea popped out for a lap, putting himself into second place on a race tyre and then improving to top spot with a 1'41.143 before nipping back for the qualifying tyre.

Alvaro Bautista was the first rider out on the yellow-stickered Q tyre and he slipped in a 1'41.098 to the provisional pole spot with five minutes remaining. Loris Baz, out on a predicted pole position time, crashed out, leaving him in a precarious seventh place as everyone started recording quick laps.

Chaz Davies put himself in third place, behind Rea's race tyre lap, while Tom Sykes was brewing up a fast one. Sykes set a bonkers 1'40.483 to go quickest ahead of Sandro Cortese and Alex Lowes with Jonathan Rea the only rider with enough tyre left to challenge him for pole position.

Eight seconds before the flag came out, Jonathan Rea set a 1'40.372, displacing Sykes and Cortese to second and third. Leon Haslam, Alex Lowes and Alvaro Bautista rounded out the second row, ahead of Jordi Torres, a resurgent Marco Melandri and Markus Reiterberger.

Jonathan Rea claimed the qualifying record at Portimao, while his arch rival Alvaro Bautista was five places behind, the only Ducati to qualify in the front three rows.
