2019 Brno Moto3 Qualifying Result: Earning That Cake

The weather could not make up its mind in Brno and the fully dry and sunny track at the end of FP3 turned into thunder and rain by the time qualifying came about. Wet or dry, there was one man who was fast in any conditions that came his way, Tony Arbolino gifting himself pole position and a swanky Tissot on his birthday.

The battle always looked like it would be between Arbolino, John McPhee and Raul Fernandez but the roulette eventually stopped on the young Italian. However, Scottish genes came to the fore for McPhee and he swam his way into second, four tenths of a second off pole. Benefitting from the experience of Q1, Fernandez looked set to challenge the duo on his final lap but a crash at turn three allowed the two SIC58 machines ahead of him. First, it was Tatsuki Suzuki who snuck in on the front row but then Niccolo Antonelli denied his teammate with a late attack.

With Antonelli filling in the front row, Suzuki will share the second row of the grid with Fernandez and Aron Canet, the Spaniard being the last man to post a time within a second of pole. Makar Yurchenko made his way through Q1 on route to opening the third row, ahead of Jaume Masia and Ai Ogura, while Alonso Lopez, Romano Fenati and Kaito Toba completed row four.

Can Oncu impressed by getting through Q1 despite a late crash and qualified 13th, significantly ahead of the Leopard Racing duo who had a dreadful afternoon. Championship leader Lorenzo Dalla Porta was hindered by some early mechanical trouble and only qualified 17th, one place ahead of teammate Marcos Ramirez, who struggled throughout the day and both will start from row six.
