The holiday vibe was well and truly over by Saturday morning, heavy rain greeting riders on their way to the circuit for the second day of action. The lightweight class made good use of track time on a wet enough surface for decent slow-mo shots but there was no chance for Friday times to be beaten or at least threatened. The FP1 leader was back to snatch FP3, Jaume Masia grabbing the headlines on his final flying lap by half a tenth from Romano Fenati. The two riders were one step ahead in the tricky conditions, finishing the session almost half a second faster than Tony Arbolino.
The rain brought some new kids out to play, Makar Yurchenko thriving in the difficult conditions and climbing up to fourth position, a couple tenths faster than rookie Can Oncu. With the top five covered by one second, Raul Fernandez was best of the rest in sixth spot, ahead of Albert Arenas and the first of the championship contenders, Aron Canet. Rookie Ai Ogura and wet weather connoisseur John McPhee completed the top ten. Championship leader Lorenzo Dalla Porta had limited running and did not seem to chase a fast time on his way to 27th position.
Back on the combined standings for Q2 places, there was one change from Friday though. After Friday leader Gabriel Rodrigo suffered collarbone and pelvis fractures in his late FP2 crash, the Argentine rider’s unplanned trip to Barcelona freed up a spot for Kaito Toba in the top 14 lineup. The Japanese rider will join Arbolino, Suzuki, Vietti, Masia, Dalla Porta, Canet, Antonelli, Fenati, Ramirez, McPhee, Ogura, Migno and Salac directly in Q2.
