Only a couple of hours after the downpour, the intermediate class did not need much persuading to switch to slick tyres and the surface was fully dry by the end of the session, prompting a classic FP3 time attack. As the only class standing a chance to change the hierarchy in the combined standings, riders really got to work for the final five minutes and some were more successful than others. Nicolo Bulega continues to put himself in the shop window, this time by leading FP3, four hundredths of a second ahead of compatriot Lorenzo Baldassarri, who seems to be joining him in the Escape from Tavullia. Baldassarri was also one of only two riders who managed to improve their Friday times, joining the top four on combined standings.
Teammate Augusto Fernandez completed the top three and was joined by early leader Marcel Schrotter and rookie Enea Bastianini in the top five. Xavi Vierge was another of the riders who left an impression on the combined top 14, climbing to 12th overall and sixth in FP3. Bo Bendsneyder found some pace to go seventh, ahead of Jorge Martin and Alex Marquez. The championship leader was another of the early leaders in FP3 and but, a few wobbly moments later, got pushed back to ninth, with Jorge Navarro completing the top ten.
Despite a more subdued result in FP3, Fabio Di Giannantonio remained the fastest man of the weekend overall, leading combined standings ahead of Bulega, Nagashima, Baldassarri, Schrotter, Fernandez, Luthi, and Marquez, with Navarro, Lowes, Bastianini, Vierge, Marini and Binder snatching the final Q2 places. After a difficult Friday, Steven Odendaal did not exactly have it his own way on Saturday either but he did provide an excellent save while hanging on the side of his bike that was worthy of several slow-mo replays.
