2019 Brno Moto2 FP1 Result: Nagashima Eager To Get Going

Holiday mood was definitely gone by the time the intermediate class took their turn to get back to work and clouds were getting darker in the background. Rain never became a concern but FP1 gave a bit of a shakeup to the usual hierarchy, with Tetsuta Nagashima putting his name at the top of the timesheets for the final part of the session. A more familiar sight was Brad Binder in second position, the Red Bull KTM rider putting his new chassis to good use straight away and coming six hundredths of a second short of the lead. Augusto Fernandez celebrated his contract extension with the Flexbox HP40 squad with a top three, only one thousandth of a second slower than Binder.

Mattia Pasini is back for good and showed it by leading a big chunk of the session, before slipping down to fourth. Tom Luthi completed the top five but over half a second slower than the leader and little over half a tenth ahead of Nicolo Bulega, whose recent separation from the Doctor’s Academy seems to given him a boost of motivation. No such worries for the future for Iker Lecuona, who finished seventh and six tenths down on Nagashima. Jorge Navarro, Sam Lowes and Remy Gardner completed the top ten, with the likes of Luca Marini, Xavi Vierge and rookie Fabio Di Giannantonio also within a second of the lead.

Some perhaps surprising names did not make the cut, Lorenzo Baldassarri 15th, championship leader Alex Marquez 19th and excellent rookie Enea Bastianini 25th, but it’s far too early to get concerned for the trio.
