2019 Sachsenring Moto3 FP1 Result: Rookie In the Spotlight

After barely a couple days’ rest, the show was back on track at a grey Sachsenring. The warmth of Assen was gone and a dusty surface welcomed the lightweight class but pace picked up drastically by the end of the day’s first session. John McPhee picked up the lead on lap four, after harshly picking up Niccolo Antonelli and the Petronas Sprinta rider spent most of his morning at the top of the timesheets, until fresh tyres hit the track and times came tumbling. Rookie Raul Fernandez found the most time, nearly two tenths faster than Montmelo victor Marcos Ramirez, despite an early tumble for the Leopard racer. Jakub Kornfeil in third was the final rider to drop into the 1:26s.

McPhee fought back to keep fourth position but was the last man to finish within half a second of the leader. Latest winner Tony Arbolino joined the top five, with Romano Fenati making a late jump into sixth. It was a good morning for rookies, Filip Salac and Can Oncu climbing to seventh and eighth positions, while Ayumu Sasaki and Aron Canet completed the top ten. The championship leader was out of the top 15 until the final charge and ended up as the first rider with a time over a second slower than Fernandez.

The likes of Jaume Masia, Alonso Lopez, Gabriel Rodrigo and Lorenzo Dalla Porta were spread across the rest of the top 20, while Antonelli, Tatsuki Suzuki and rookie of the year leader Celestino Vietti had even more low key mornings.
