Twenty one laps on a hot Italian track and both GRT Yamaha riders - Marco Melandri and Sandro Cortese - decided to use the ten lap Superpole SCX tyre.
Alvaro Bautista opened the race ahead of the three Kawasakis of Leon Haslam, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jonathan Rea. Marco Melandri held fifth place until Alex Lowes took it from him at turn four, but Melandri took it back at turn eight.
On lap two, at turn four, Alvaro Bautista changed the shape of the championship by crashing at turn four and putting three Kawasakis at the lead of the race. Leon Haslam set the fastest lap in first place only to have third-placed Toprak Razgatlioglu reset it a few tenths later.
Lap four was three Kawasakis ahead of three Yamahas, with Alex Lowes between the GRT Yamahas of Marco Melandri and Sandro Cortese. Toprak Razgatlioglu, sliding both tyres smoothly around turn four, passed Jonathan Rea for second place and, into turn one of lap five, took the lead from a hard-to-pass Leon Haslam. A few seconds behind, Sandro Cortese lost the front into turn one, picking his bike up and recovering in last place. At turn eleven, Jonathan Rea, unwilling to be stuck behind Leon Haslam, took second place from him.
Lap six, with the leading five all within striking distance of each other, Marco Melandri made a play for third place, attacking Leon Haslam at turn two only to have the pair bash into each other during turn three. Haslam retained third place.
Toprak Razgatlioglu continued to slide both tyres around a couple of corners with only Jonathan Rea, not sliding his tyres, able to keep up. As Leon Haslam dropped off the leading two, with Marco Melandri for company, the leading two started to increase their gap, lap after lap.
By lap eleven, Alex Lowes caught up to Haslam and Melandri, Haslam almost two seconds off Rea, and Alvaro Bautista had climbed up to eighteenth place. A few laps later, three laps past his tyre's use-by date, Marco Melandri carried too much speed for the amount of grip available and crashed out, recovering outside the points, putting Alvaro Bautista back in the points.
Apart from Michael Ruben Rinaldi briefly catching the battle between Haslam and Lowes and dropping back shortly after, the next few laps showed no change at the front, but on lap eighteen of twenty one, Jonathan Rea took the lead. With a wide line out of turn sixteen, using all of the available track, and a bit more, to get a fast exit onto the straight, he powered past Toprak Razgatlioglu to take the lead into the first turn. Razgatlioglu fought back, but couldn't pass Rea.
On the penultimate lap, five seconds behind the leading pair, Alex Lowes took third place from Leon Haslam into turn one, but Haslam used turn two to take it right back. On the last lap, Razgatlioglu, smelling his first possible World Superbike win, tried a pass on Jonathan Rea at turn four, but couldn't make it work until turn eight, only to have Rea pass back underneath as he exited wide.
As Jonathan Rea exited the last corner, Razgatlioglu knew he had no chance and instead took a career best second place behind the reigning world champion with a triumphant wheelie. Leon Haslam made it al all-Kawasaki podium three tenths ahead of Alex Lowes. Alvaro Bautista finished in fourteenth place, netting two points.
Jonathan Rea sliced another twenty three points off Alvaro Bautista's championship lead, reducing it to just sixteen points. Toprak Razgatlioglu's second place catapulted him past Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri to take sixth place behind Leon Haslam.
