The lightweight class didn’t quite do justice to the glorious sunshine that Mugello offered for their qualifying session as they spent a significant amount of time dawdling and gesticulating. But after a comical Q1 for all involved, Tony Arbolino vindicated his colleagues with a fantastic pole position setting a new all time lap record for the Moto3 class in Mugello. It was a quick reversal of fortunes as the Snipers rider had no time set until his final flying lap due to some adventures outside track limits. The Italian’s one laptime left rivals in the dust, with the two men sharing front row being the only ones within a second of the poleman. Gabriel Rodrigo’s second position was made all the more impressive by the fact he did in on his own and without a tow, while Lorenzo Dalla Porta completed the front row.
Andrea Migno was another of the local men at the business end of the grid, after sneaking through Q1 at the last second. The Italian should share second row with the SIC58 duo of Tatsuki Suzuki and Niccolo Antonelli, who had led proceedings for much of Q2, but there are some question marks around whether the two exited pitlane before the light turned green. Regardless of any penalties coming their way, Antonelli looked disappointed to miss the final time attack for no immediately obvious reason.
Romano Fenati did not quite match his teammate’s performance but placed on the third row, ahead of Kaito Toba and Marcos Ramirez – the Spaniard venting all his anger on track in Q1 before a decent performance in Q2. Aron Canet might be somewhat disappointed with a fourth row start, sharing the space with Alonso Lopez and Jaume Masia. A bit lower down, Q1 leader Raul Fernandez struggled to do any better than 15th, while recent winner John McPhee’s risky strategy of doing only one run didn’t work out and left him stranded in 18th.
It’s worth noting that, not entirely unusual for the Moto3 class, grid positions are pending any likely penalties for pervasive group cruising on the racing line and possibly that odd pitlane exit incident.
