2019 Mugello Moto2 FP3 Result: First For Fernandez

The final practice rodeo for the intermediate class had some surprises in store for the upcoming qualifying session. The lead changed hands plenty of times but one side of the FLEXBOX HP40 garage had significantly more reasons to smile than the other as the checkered flag came out. Augusto Fernandez picked up the lead for the final ten minutes and never let go, although Tom Luthi came within nine thousandths of a second of spoiling his day. Another tenth down, Alex Marquez completed the top three.

After the locals dominated proceedings on Friday, the first Italian in FP3 was Enea Bastianini in fourth. The rookie was only a tenth and a half off the lead and ahead of Remy Gardner and Jorge Navarro. Friday’s top man Luca Marini finished the morning seventh but not too far from the top, with compatriot Mattia Pasini and Marcel Schrotter two tenths off fastest time. Early leader Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the top ten despite a late tumble, while the final Q2 spots went to Andrea Locatelli, Sam Lowes, Simone Corsi and Tetsuta Nagashima. The British rider might have done better had it not been for a crash limiting his track time.

Q1 should provide plenty of excitement given that the lineup includes Xavi Vierge, Jorge Martin, Brad Binder or Lorenzo Baldassarri. The championship leader had a difficult morning with a mechanical issue halfway through the session and he struggled to make progress on 16th place once rejoining the action.
