2019 Le Mans Moto2 Qualifying Result: Down But By No Means Out

The final session of the day kept the same pattern as their colleagues’ outings: fighting through the drizzle and hoping to go fast before the inevitable tumble. Jorge Navarro perfected that strategy, scraping through Q1 by one thousandth of a second and making good use of his track experience to score back to back pole positions – before coming off his bike quite unpleasantly in turn 8 and jogging to parc ferme.

Top Q1 qualifier Tom Luthi also managed the feat of crashing out while in provisional pole but had to settle for second once Navarro stole his thunder. With the two fastest men thoroughly testing the gravel trap, Alex Marquez kept quiet throughout the session and found himself alone in parc ferme after securing the final place on the front row.

On the second row, it’s like Mattia Pasini never left, the Italian joining the crash list but also finishing the session as the last man within a second of pole. Although quite a way off in terms of laptime, Xavi Vierge brought home a decent result in fifth, ahead of Andrea Locatelli’s excellent second row start. Lorenzo Baldassarri made a late jump from outside the top 15 to seventh, while Brad Binder waited until his final flying lap to become the top KTM on the third row, stealing that honour from an outstanding Lukas Tulovic.

Marcel Schrotter rounded out the top ten after an early crash that might not have helped his grid position or his already precarious physical condition. A fairly impressive Jake Dixon showed the way to Remy Gardner to complete row four. Despite demonstrating decent speed in practice, Sam Lowes failed to get out of Q1 following a crash and will have to fight his way back from 26th grid position.
