Marcel Schrotter made it a clean-sweep of the Moto2 weekend practices at the Circuit of the Americas track in Texas with a pole position. Schrotter, who topped the timesheet in FP1 and FP2 (FP3 was canceled due to rain) finished the session just five-hundredths of a second in front of second-place Alex Marquez.
The German rider sits third in the Moto2 championship while Marquez is fourth two points behind. Marquez, who finished on the podium in the previous race and who twice has been a top-five Moto2 finisher at COTA, ended qualifying two-tenths in front of the final front-row rider, Sam Lowes (3rd).
Thomas Luthi (4th) led the session through the halfway point but was unable to respond when the top-three riders set their fastest laps at the session's end. Joining him on the second row are Brad Binder (5th) and Jorge Navarro (6th). Mattia Pasini, a fill-in replacement rider for an injured Agusto Fernandez, put his Kalex in the lead spot on the third row in seventh. He was the last rider on the grid to finish qualifying within a second of Schrotter's time.
Moto2 rookie Jorge Martin, who crashed out of previous race, will start eighth on the grid for Sunday race. Simone Corsi (9th) and Luca Marini complete the top 10. And where's championship leader Lorenzo Baldasarri? The rider who won the season's first two races sits in 15th, the fifth row's final slot.
