2019 Austin Moto2 FP2 Result: Schrotter’s Two For Two

The final session of the day saw the intermediate class benefit from the added grip of a full day of action but Xavi Vierge quickly became the first victim of the bumps in FP2, sliding out in turn two before even setting a lap in anger. Tom Luthi had no such problems and set camp at the top of the timesheets early on, with only Sam Lowes within half a second of his benchmark for most of the session. The calm before the storm allowed a false sense of security but Marcel Schrotter’s FP1 domination was back in the final time attack and the German rider took the lead by half a second. Luthi made it a Dynavolt lock-out at the front, with Alex Marquez best of the rest only nine hundredths of a second behind the Swiss veteran.

Luca Marini had a low key session but put in a fast lap at the end to jump into fourth, pushing Lowes down to fifth. Lorenzo Baldassarri missed out on the top five by only a hundredth of a second, with a similarly small gap keeping compatriot Fabio Di Giannantonio behind. Mattia Pasini second outing on the Triumph engine grabbed him an impressive eighth position, while Jorge Navarro and Remy Gardner completed the top ten as the final men within a second of the leader.

With rain in the forecast for FP3, Tetsuta Nagashima, Andrea Locatelli, Simone Corsi and Enea Bastianini look like the final men to secure Q2 positions, while the top KTM was Brad Binder in 15th place. Vierge managed to rejoined the track after his early misfortune but the handful of laps he did were only fast enough for 18th position.
