In a cold session, the top five were separated by just three hundredths of a second with the top seven under a sixth of a second.
Tom Sykes, on a track where the BMW's lack of power isn't as much of a disadvantage, took the top spot as the flag came out after a session topped by the Kawasakis of Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam. Markus Reiterberger was fourth-quickest on the second BMW, ahead of Michael van der Mark. Alvaro Bautista spent most of the session languishing towards the bottom of the list but climbed up to sixth place at the end of the session.
